Hi,
I'm trying to create a fighting scenario with conventional weapons (no RPG, avoiding grenades...just special ops shooting each other) and using modern armor - Advanced Body Armor to be precise. The strange situation that arised is as follows: with DR=35 for torso area, a bullet only starts making damage after 6d damage (36...). The most damaging non-sniper rifle in the high tech tables are about 7d, with a mean damage that is far from 35. Lets look at one NATO rifle stats, for instance: FN MK 16 MOD 0, 5.56x45mm 4d+2 pi don't even tickles with this armor... So... are the boys going to drop the guns, run, and kill each other with katanas? What weapons one can use to kill the enemy? Of course, I'm not very used to this setting :o) Digging around the high tech, outside the tables (This is really annoying, because the tables are supposed to help finding the right guns to the setting. It this one on page 122.) I found variants for MK 16 such as MK 17 using SCAR H (listed in the wikipedia as marine equipment). It does 7d pi, with some luck you CAN bypass armor with this. Most shots will not... One thing that I could use is special ammno, such as Armor Piercing. Reduces pi to pi- for this kind of caliber. But, is that common? Another option is "precision" combat: instead of aiming at the torso, going to *more or less* unprotected areas, such as head shots (helmet dr 12+2), face (dr 10... is this realistic for a transparent visor?)... is this the way people fight now? aiming at the eye, at the armor breaches? I did some math, and with headshots (at Skull, -7) the chance to kill is much more realistic... but you will need decent equipment, bracing, and aiming. With one 5d bullet doing maximum damage, it's certain death (-64 hp, with dr 12). Mean damage is (15-12-2=1*4=4) of brain damage. Another option would be to record damage to the armor, and reduce DR. But in fact, modern armors are everyday more resistant to multiple shots - the days of pure ceramic that breaks in the first shot are gone. What makes myself wonder: are the weapon tables of high tech up-to-date? How to update them myself? Any thoughts? Am I picking the wrong weapons, ammno, or what? Thanks *On Dune, the advent of personal shields reintroduced melee combat... is that our future? |
