I am about to start a campaign in Cardiel on Y'rth and as this will come up in the game I thought I would ask the hive mind for advice.
Who in Cardiel issues knighthoods? Is it the prince or does each duke/baron issue knight hoods as they see fit?

Both I would think. Maybe itīs more of a prestige to get knighted by the Prince and it could come with some land and gold.

In my games I tend to give royal knights, and royal personal in general, a level or 2 of Social Regard: Crown Service. Or maybe some 1 pt status if you feell that it would be more aprropriate.

Thanks guys for your answers I expected it would be both in this case.
Any thoughts on wether or not non warriors would ever get knighted. Here I am thinking battle wizards.

Why not - Knight being a title not a RP class.

Even singers have become knights.
If you pay enough, you can have the title even to your horse. |

I remember that in Yrth that is not necessariy true. Megalos allows titles to be sold, Caithness do not. But I dont remember how Cardiel handle the issue.

In real life, it was just the King/Queen who handed out knighthoods.

Theoretically any member of chivalry could knight another person, ie. admit them to chivlarous arms. Enfoefment and admission to the heirarchies of vassalage was a different thing. The theoretical however quickly fell into disfavour and the right to make knights crept up the social scale, but not exclusively monarchs. Popes, dukes, and even regnant counts I think created chivalric orders even after the middle ages.
