Hi All,
The concept of Yrth being difficult to get too in IW, but White Star Trading having an established set up seems to have come up on a number of threads. This suggests some form of semi-regular but perhaps difficult travel! http://forums.sjgames.com/showthread.php?t=103329 So what are people's ideas, how does Infinity circumvent the Quantum sargasso on a regular basis? And what difficulties might they face? Thanks Max

IW 150 states only magic spells, portals, and banestorms let you get off of yrth. presumably, infinity knows one of these to get off world.
Its not going to be the banestorm. They're not that good. They may have been able to locate a portal. Given that such a thing would be a major find, I assume its out to sea and was found by mundane parachronics rather than magic. Its possible they imported some magical know how, but the only people who would know how is the cabal. Its also possible that they were able to finally answer questions yrthian wizards have been puzzling over for centuries and they are using local resources to leave.

Banestorm says that he first scout ended up there by accident and only escaped after he found a plot device magic item (which he promptly lost contol of after he escaped). By far the most likely means (used by the follow up group and then White Star) is some sort of natural portal that's pemrnantly open. That's the one sort of thing that the Sargasso rules wouldn't affect after it was opened. The Sargasso Effect would make it harder to open a new portal. Anyway, Banestorm simply doesn't say how it's done and very deliberately leaves that up to the GM.

Right. It's the crossworld version of the Hotel California.

One possible way out (or in) is buried in one of the old 3e GURPS Fantasy Adventures available on e23, of course.... ;)

Ooooh! There is too. And in my Tredroy game one of the PCs owns the access to it. Hmmm....

Also, White Star Trading is a Cabal front. The Cabal's general schtick is the use of astrological and decanic modifiers. The sargasso imposes a -25 penalty to skill for the Plane Shift spell. Having a fairly high skill to start with, and casting at the right weekday and place, using the right implements, and maybe having some paut available for a big energy boost, will allow a Cabal mage to get off of Yrth with some reliability (though not necessarily on short notice).
They don't spread the word around about this and become a get-off-of-Yrth service because the systematic use of the decanic modifiers isn't widely known, and they're a big Cabal advantage. |

Only if the Cabal has suborned Infinity, which is the canonical owner of White Star Trading.
