Fighting a Monster after Looting The Room

OK Heres the newest entry in Noob Questions:

Regarding the turn phase, if you opt not to look for trouble but loot the room, can you fight a monster during that phase turn if the card you picked is a monster?

and

what if you decided to "loot the room" rather than look for trouble with a monster in your hand, can you fight that monster in your hand?

We've been playing it on the basis you can only fight a monster if its one you got from looting the room phase only if you opted not to fight one in your hand.
