Re: Dungeon Fantasy, Action!, Monster Hunters... what other like that would you like?
Personally, I think that a Bughunt would be a worthwhile. Hell, a friend of mine has self published a very gurps-y fudge game called "Caceria de Bichos" (Bughunt in Spanish, preorder here for the player's book, and here for the GM book) that looks very cool. I pre-ordered a copy (mainly to help him get the minimum number of preorders so he doesn't end up having to remortgage to pay for the print run, yeah, he's going for PDF+dead tree, in the current economy. Let's wish him luck).
Also, I would like a CoC-esque series. Hell, no need for a stand alone series, just take the Pulp Hunters pyramid article, expand it, and include a section for pulp sidekicks. You can then sell it as MH5. |

I'd absolutely love to see something in the vein of Space Opera. My ideal is a combination of the Korval novels, Firefly and Star Wars. Spaceships are just from the Spaceships series and adapted for dramatic needs via the installation of spherical cows as required. The Space Atlas books provide the necessary setting material, and Ultra Tech the cool toys.
The chief problem I see is that short of a bug hunt, there is very little shared in common in the science fiction genre, so there's no ability for shared assumptions to smooth the way for GMs and players. GURPS Western could be fun, but I'm not sure about the market thereof. Certainly Spaghetti Westerns, Louis L'Amour and the cheap western romance they show on The Hallmark Channel could provide a good set of shared assumptions. The biggest concern would be that of market size. While I cut my teeth on cheap Louis L'Amour novels (I nearly failed Jr. High English because Mr. L'Amour had a lot more to teach me about the language than my instructor did), I don't see newer gamers really buying into it.

In your words: Quote:
The sub-sub-subgenre that Bughunt would cover, on the other hand, is narrow: Futuristic space science fiction, set mainly on (hell) planets, (overrun) bases, and (derelict) spacecraft, with the focus squarely on infantry combat, not spacecraft. There are strongly established tropes: recognizable weaponry (rifles, machine guns, flamethrowers, hand grenades, etc.) boosted just a little into the future; costly, not-very-fast space travel that requires small, well-drilled teams to be sent out without backup; a clear assignment to kill, not to bring back or establish contact; and all the worries about who pays for the guns, fuel, and so on swept under the carpet ("the Marines," "the Company," whatever). The bughunt just about never messes with psi or the most rubber of superscience, and mostly looks like modern-day special ops, in space, with better guns and body armor. There's a whole lot less room for Players 1 to N and the GM to have N+1 incompatible views.

No Force Swords? I was sorta thinking on the Clone Wars cartoon . . . . lots and lots of focus on people running around doing stuff, with psi and force swords

Re: Dungeon Fantasy, Action!, Monster Hunters... what other like that would you like?
Psi exists in both the Starship Troopers book as well as the film and TV series. I don't think anything else could be considered the prototype for the 'bughunt' genre than Starship Troopers (even Aliens, the other possible prototype, was based heavily on it), honestly, so I think Psi definitely has its place. That said, it usually exists as part of the background, like spaceships, so I can definitely see an argument for 'just include it as an optional template, maybe in a Pyramid article on Psi in Bughunts or something'. EDIT: Force Swords, on the other hand, are not a feature in any bughunt prototype I can think of.

Turn GURPS Technomancer into a streamlined series.

Well, since I was eyeballing how to beat on Monster Hunters to turn it into a Bughunt, count me in as wanting Bughunt done up right.
One of the best gaming experiences I ever had was the old Leading Edge Games Aliens RPG with a GM who had no soul that any of us could detect... |

Re: Dungeon Fantasy, Action!, Monster Hunters... what other like that would you like?
Bear with my musings, here . . .
When MH1 came out, there was much rejoicing, but also a number of people who were upset that the default power level went up from the previous two series books. I heard more than a few folks say that GURPS works best with lower-powered, more realistic characters, and that we need a genre series aimed at that. That begs two questions. I'll ask them here, then answer them below: 1. Are these people right? Specifically, would a worked genre series that assumes (let's say) 75-150-point PCs be a good idea? By that, I mean would enough people buy it, and in large enough numbers for it to be profitable? 2. What genre would best benefit from this treatment (and is different enough from DF/A/MH to justify doing)? What genre would work best with characters of "potential hero" power levels (instead of "full-on action hero" or higher) and a grittier, less-cinematic take on GURPS? (And I suppose there's a third question mixing the first two -- even if you think the answer to #1 is, "Yes, people want this!" would the answer to #2 also be something people would buy?)
