(IC) Lost In Dreams [Peter]

Peter's stealth is only a little practiced (he's still at skill 10), but a little luck (rolled a 6) and a Karana fly gets him close to the dinosaur.



Its a strange looking beast: Bipedal, with enormous front claws and a smallish head, like he'd have expected to see on a long-necked dinosaur. The neck is only of moderate length. The animal is large enough that he's not actually sure of the size: "dinosaur-sized" is the first thing that comes to mind. Its covered in the most scraggly flightless feathers Peter has ever seen.



The beast is ripping foliage off of trees with its long arms and claws, and shoveling it into its mouth.

He sends his fly straight up for one last over-view for his bearings and releases it's smoke into the breeze.

Peter creeps along through the brush. He wants to see this creature with his own eyes, to really get the scale of it.

Peter observes it for a minute or two and then turns back and travels to the gate.

The creature is legitimately taller than a house, at least when it stretches its neck high like its doing. 20 feet tall? maybe? maybe more like 17? Something about the way the creature moves evokes power: something inside him tells him he does not want to accidentally collide with something so large and powerful.


The creature sniffs the air... does it smell him


(I don't think you can "release" Karana creations like that...they persist until they run out of energy).

Uh oh... which way is the breeze blowing? I think Peter is knowledgeable enough to be aware and stay upwind of quarry they are tracking when possible.

Peter makes mental note of if there are any trees or shrubs the great creature has shunned or favors as he backs off and gives the creature it's space.

He heads off in the direction of the gate...

stealth-10 says he knows the theory and basics... There wasn't much wind at all.

It was eating a tall tree that reminded him somewhat of a juniper, with its leaves small and stacked on each other to make a complete leaf.

Peter makes it away from the dinosaur without arousing its ire.

He's able to see some small animals... including an ordinary squirrel, and lots of birds with claws on their wings and what look like lips and teeth in their mouth. And some pretty big bugs.

Its another two hours, and most of the way to the gate before he sees anything really large. And its not that large, but it is that threatening: he suddenly sees a green and black spotted theropod dinosaur, maybe four feet tall. It may be shorter than him, but its much longer, and its definitely weighs more than him. Its seen him too, about 13 yards away, watching him with big curious eyes.


OCC: rolled 16 for stealth but 12 for Per.

Peter stands tall and considers the creature, and begins speaking in soft tones.
Starting as more an exhale than a word, Peter says:

"Wow... Hey there buddy... Are you some kinda mini-Rex? Let's be friends Rexy... or you just keep on walking your way and I'll go mine."

He puts a hand up between Goliath and the creature, signalling the hound to take it easy, while his eyes trace all the details of the creature, both to appreciate its appearance, and to be wary of its body language and stay alert to the threat it represents.

Peter's Animal Empathy allows him to use his influence skills on animals, and his Call of the Wild lets him ignore most penalties for creatures, and finally Animal Friend will give him a bonus to reactions. So let's start with a Diplomacy check and take it from there.

He puts a hand up between Goliath and the creature, signalling the hound to take it easy.

Rexy sniffs. It* seems more curious than aggressive. The feathers are small and fine. The arms look too large to be a t-rex... all three fingers. It also doesn't have the cocked claw of a raptor. Its not showing its teeth, which is comforting. The nostrils and nose are large. It seems to be inspecting Julian just as much as Julian is inspecting it. It walks slowly closer, until its about 6 yards away.

Goliath stays close to Julian, wary but not making any threat displays. Yet. The big dog is nervous.

*determining the sex of a bird whose species doesn't shout it out with plumage or behavior is quite difficult.

OCC: Diplomacy, Charisma, Empath, Animal Friend (Appearance doesn't count here)... I think effective skill here is 16?

Peter tries to keep himself and all the critters calm while they all absorb the unusual encounter. He does not approach the dino, but will raise his hand to mid-body height to offer if the creature decides to approach for a sniff.

"Hey there. Easy now."

Peter keeps talking in his gentle tones encouraging Goliath and "rexy" to remain calm.

Rexy continues to slowly approach, and gets within two feet of the hand. It sniffs again, and then backs up and nibbles one of its toes and preens a few feathers.

Peter spends a few minutes keeping Goliath calm and apprecaiting the creature until it moves on. He then proceeds to the gate.
