If the AI (or it's hardware) becomes buggy or obsolete the owner is very likely to change it, aren't they?

Points are for PCs, who normally do not get replaced by their owners (or if they do, the PC becomes the replacement).

I don't think anyone is calling for that, are they? Saying "You need to define your character differently if they own a house from if they rent a house" isn't the same thing. Owning a (paid off) house is having a major asset, one that manifests as having more disposable income. Owning any number of towels is just an incidental feature of daily life.

I mean, I suppose I might consider a perk, "Well Furnished," for the character whose house has exceptionally good supplies and furnishings for their wealth level, enabling them to always have clean towels or good china or whatever. But the whole point of that would be that you wouldn't have to detail in advance. It's kind of like a "No Nuisance Rolls" perk. . . .

Not paying the 80% means that everything you own needs to be listed on your character sheet, IMO. If you take the 100% "wanderer" option and it's not listed, you don't own it.

Well, yes, but if I were such a person I wouldn't own any dozen towels, either.

Yes, but what I was responding to was Vicky's assertion that if you rent you don't need to spend the 80% which is not how I interpret that rule.

Player: Okay well I'm renting, so I am going to spend 100% of my starting wealth on Guns, Guns, more Guns and Ammo. Then in a month I'll pay CoL. This means I start with a furnished apartment and all kinds of lifestyle accoutrements for free, suckers!
GM: Uh, no.

The incentive to spend the 80% is to have a settled lifestyle, the accumulated (and non-itemized) accoutrements of said lifestyle and not be a homeless murder-hobo. It doesn't have anything to do with renting or owning.

Oh, that. Yeah, that was obviously wrong. "I rent an apartment" does not imply "I rent a fully furnished apartment with kitchenware, clothing, and household electronics." (I don't actually know what furnished apartments rent for; I would never think of taking one. My apartment is furnished in geek.)

I pretty much don't see furnished apartments for rent, though a sublet or housesitting is probably furnished (just quite limited term).

Basing on the last big kerfluffle about this (wherein we learned that according to RAW all GURPS characters are nekkid :) ) it's apparently a European thing to be able to rent fully furnished apartments with cash, no lease and no deposit. Or something.

In my area, about an additional $1000 - $1500 / mo compared to the unfurnished ones.
