Yes, but would "remove the 3I content" be sufficiently far enough from the "specific expression I used in the articles"? Or would I somehow have to rephrase everything while not changing any of the actual content? There's rules and tables in there derived from realworld science, I can't exactly change the numbers in those very much without departing from the realism.

Those are questions for an IP attorney. We've gone past the point where I'd be comfortable advising you.

Eh, it's just not worth the hassle. I'm just peeved that someone else can republish these articles without authors having any kind of say-so at all. Maybe that's how it's supposed to work, but it doesn't make it feel any better.

I guess there's no situation where the rights revert back to the authors then?

If you sell your car to someone, do you expect to get veto power, or to get paid again, if they then sell that car to a third person? Or surely the car manufacturer should get some say in what happens to its cars every time they're sold, whereas you as mere first purchaser shouldn't be allowed to resell it without their permission or paying them again?

If you want to have control over what happens after the first sale, then draft your contract terms so that you're only licensing the right to publish your article to the first company, and don't sell them the copyright. Then, once they're done, you'd be able to sell the article elsewhere. Of course, they may not want to buy the article under those terms. But that's your problem for being extra demanding than other authors (if that's the case), as well as forcing the buyers to deal with contract terms other than the usual one. It would be perfectly possible and legal, though. You just have to get the other party to agree to those terms.

If you don't understand a contract, then educate yourself, pay a lawyer to explain the contract to you, hire an agent experienced in the field to advise you, or don't sign it. But if you do sign it and then just assume whatever idea you had in mind for its meaning would be legally binding later, regardless of what the contract actually says -- well, that's exactly what written contracts are meant to avoid.

It's pretty easy to find advice for aspiring authors on the web. Here's a few to start with.

Well, if you said yes to one you are in fact making an accusation.

Have you seen evidence, or know about a case in any manner, where the authorship was deleted from an article? That is, in the context of the companies we are taking about - SJGames and FFE? Frankly I don't follow authorship rights too closely regarding these companies so I don't know. For example, I have not seen a copy of the Imperiallines reboot yet - is that what you are talking about?

That seems to be a serious charge. Probably not illegal given the terms but unethical at best.

Actually, we're getting into legal issues that SHOULD NOT be hashed out here. If you think you have a legal case, you should be consulting an attorney (barrister, whatever). Otherwise, it's probably best if you move along.

MOD WARNING: Further discussion of possible legal issues or legal action will result in this thread being closed permanently and may result in infractions for the poster, depending on the nature of the offending text.

Yeah, sorry.

All that aside I still think years of Traveller material in the form of JTAS should be made available, and I'm glad and hopeful the whys and wherefores are being hashed out so this can happen.
