RPM Ritual: Destroy Matter Question
Are the following three ritual correct, as far as RAW?
Ok, first some assumptions and references. GURPS Basic, p. 558: Object Hit Points Table. This gives the HP of unliving machines or homogenous/diffuse items. Air, water, dirt, and stone are diffuse. The table gives approximates, but has a formula for exactness. For diffuse items it is 8 x (cube root of the weight of the item). Next, for simple items, it will be a Lesser Destroy Matter effect. In order to avoid rolling all the damage dice, you can instead just add enough dice so that the average reaches the target number. You must include the weight of the object being destroyed. Destruction is instant. Examples: For Destroy Air: 1 cubic yard of air weigh 2.18 lbs., which would give it 3.46 HP, putting it within the 1d6 included damage amount. 1 cubic yard of air weigh 2.18 lbs., which would put it into the under 10 lbs. included weight. Destroy Air Spell Effects: Lesser Destroy Matter Inherent Modifiers: None Greater Effects: 0 (x1) This ritual destroys 1 cubic yard of air. Typical Casting: Lesser Destroy Matter (5) + Damage: 1d6 (0) + Subject Weight: 10 lbs. (0) + Time: Instant (0) Cost: 5 energy For Destroy Water: 1 cubic yard of water weighs 1,685.55 lbs., which would give it 95.21 HP, making it 27d6+1, or 109 energy. 1 cubic yard of water weighs 1,685.55 lbs., which would put it into the under 3,000 lbs. included weight, or 5 energy. Destroy Water Spell Effects: Lesser Destroy Matter Inherent Modifiers: None Greater Effects: 0 (x1) This ritual destroys 1 cubic yard of water. Typical Casting: Lesser Destroy Matter (5) + Damage: 27d6+1 (109) + Subject Weight: 3,000 lbs. (5) + Time: Instant (0) Cost: 119 energy For Destroy Limestone: 1 cubic yard of limestone weighs 4,401 lbs., which would give it 131.1 HP, making it 37d6+2, or 146 energy. 1 cubic yard of limestone weighs 4,401 lbs., which would put it into the under 5 tons included weight, or 6 energy. Destroy Limestone Spell Effects: Lesser Destroy Matter Inherent Modifiers: None Greater Effects: 0 (x1) This ritual destroys 1 cubic yard of limestone. Typical Casting: Lesser Destroy Matter (5) + Damage: 27d6+2 (146) + Subject Weight: 5 tons (6) + Time: Instant (0) Cost: 157 energy |

Re: RPM Ritual: Destroy Matter Question
A cubic meter of.air weighs 1.2 kilograms, so it has 12 HP. The damage required for water and stone would usually be a greater effect, so you would need 3x the energy. It is usually a lot easier to Transform Matter rather than to Destroy Matter.
For example, Transform Solid to Gas (Greater Transform Matter; Tranform [8], Subject Mass: 5 tons [6], Duration: 12 hours [6], Greater Effect [x3]) is only 60 energy. The magician transforms up to 5 tons of nonliving solids into an equal mass of air (harmful gases require Damage). The effect harmlessly dissipates the air (purchase Damage with Explosive for effects that do not dissipate the air harmlessly). The air becomes solid after 12 hours, though it will usually only come down as harmless dust unless innately dangerous. Last edited by AlexanderHowl; 02-10-2020 at 05:17 PM. |

Re: RPM Ritual: Destroy Matter Question
What I attempted with brute force, you achieved with finesse. Thank you.
Yeah, I messed up the calculation. Sorry. Thanks for the correction. I see now that Water and Stone would be Greater effects, but as this is a TL 3/4 campaign (which you didn't know, as I never said), wouldn't Air also be a Greater effect since a Lesser effect can only do "up to about what a handheld weapon in the setting could inflict with a single blow or shot"(T:RPM, p11)? |

Re: RPM Ritual: Destroy Matter Question
Probably? That is a judgement call on the part of the GM.
