Default Long distance Fight (cruising or pacing)

According to the rules. If a character has a air move of 40 after 4 levels of enhanced air move does that mean they can cruise or use (pacing) at 20 yd/sec.?

Also how would gliding and taking advantage of thermals and such affect the character. If it is winged flight how is that affected by the above? How long could they maintain that? How long would it take them to, lets say fly from Houston to Dallas?

4 levels of enhanced move and only move 40?

If he had move 10 as basis, 1 level would give 20, 2 would give 40, 3 gives 80 and 4 gives 160.

GURPS Vehicles (3e) has extensive rules covering this and similar situations; although it isn't 4e, those rules convert fairly easily

[Edit: Too early—haven't had my coffee yet :P. Didn't quite process the OP's question. Still might apply, though]

I know the soaring modifier appeared in an issue of Pyramid, it lets flight at reduced move count as rest, or even sleep.

Otherwise, you're probably left with trying to use the hiking rules

In issue 3/6. It's a modifier specifically used for the Hive Hawk soldier caste, but usable elsewhere.
