Re: DR of shields? Why so much higher than ordinary slab of wood?
Dan is one of the authors of that fabled manuscript and he enjoys giving the hoi polloi a tantalizing glimpse of the dancing maids.
So you may regard this as a sneak preview. ;)

How do you use the chart on p.558 to determine the weight of a shield? |

You don't use the chart to determine the weight of a shield. You use the chart to determine the HP of a shield based on weight.

Re: DR of shields? Why so much higher than ordinary slab of wood?
I'd be surprised if the shield weights in the basic set aren't wrong since I've seen nothing to suggest anything but tower shields (which are moveable cover, not actual shields that you use to block with) weigh anywhere near 25 pounds (or even 15 pounds, to be honest).
I'm pretty sure you don't use the chart in the basic set to determine the weight of a shield because shields aren't just slabs of wood - they're reinforced with metal, which significantly reduces their weight for the same DR. Meanwhile, metal shields with the same amount of DR should weigh significantly less than wooden shields (since metal provides more DR for the same weight as wood), but would have lower HP. If they have the same HP, they should have more DR but weigh the same. There's no reason for metal shields to weigh more than wooden shields unless you want them to be super-reinforced or something. |

Re: DR of shields? Why so much higher than ordinary slab of wood?
So what should I use for shield weight? My DF group would find this info very useful since we do use encumbrance rules.
Dan gave up the info about DR being 4 and 2 Bruno's revised low-tech armor table gives weight for armor and not shields. If I use the chart on p.558, could I have a have an 8 lb. shield with 16 hp? Would it be medium or small? |

Re: DR of shields? Why so much higher than ordinary slab of wood?
IIRC the main difference between the LT shields and the Basic ones is that they were somewhat lighter, cheaper, and FAR flimsier (DR/HP). So just use the Basic shields with the DR and item HP based on weight as noted in this thread.

The part in the movie Troy where Brad Pitt's shield stops a spear: fantasy, or possible?
