Weak patents mean weak incentive to do the initial research. Not a good thing in my book.
I hope that the future of medication will be more about individual's unique biochemistry and less about more haphazard trials and statistical analysis of what and how bad it goes wrong. "Hey, we can tell that someone with your biochemistry is nearly immune to opiates, but can safely take X to deal with your post operative pain." I wished that happened to me a few years back.
