Soon, alliances are forged, "cruel barbaric regimes" are toppled and replaced by puppets, and then the spheres of influence cross.

Proxy war, anyone?
That's a good way to do it. Make a little competition. That also gives a lot of potential for Intel sharing... Just how close together do the Americans work with the Australians? what about with the French or Pakistanis?

Of course, the shaft only helps if useful things are on the surface. Which by default they probably are: its a great place to recruit local wizards in most settings. We don't have to make the surface useful. It might be interesting to keep it as a fine place to travel around, but not contain any real resources.

Creating safe zones around the portals is certainly at the top of the list, and terrain disadvantages could negated in areas controlled for a while, certainly.

Note that if you are facing a medieval army, you don't really need a 70-ton MBT, a lightly armored vehicle will already be a challenge for the locals.
Magic, of course, changes the equation.

In most situations, a riding lawnmower pulling a machine gun in a trailer will go a long ways, so long as you've got good visibility and can move over the terrain.

This sub-discussion is about changing that equation, of course.

A campaign where your characters are people in the "real world" who all have in common that they share vivid dreams of adventures in a fantasy universe where they are powerful warriors and wizards. But now someone in the "real world" is tracking down his enemies in the dream world and killing them in reality...

Im thinking of running an After the End/Dungeon Fantasy mashup, like He-Man meets Fallout or She-Ra/Gamma World. For the setting, Im working on the geography and historical communities of city I live in.

Which doctrine will face an interesting challenge in a "dungeon dimension" where there is no "surface" to get to. It's tunnel rats all the way down and up! The best you can hope for is to find a Caverntown, and maybe that's where the portal is in the first place.
