Part 10: Infrastructure - Contemporary & Futuristic Building Parts

This section is deliberately light on ultratech building materials since those are covered by GURPS Ultratech and are heavily campaign dependent.

I use the term "security shutter door" to describe the sort of track-mounted overhead doors used to protect shops from theft and vandalism. They're made from steel at TL6, aluminum at TL7+, and aluminum & plastic or composite at TL8. Action heroes use Parkour moves to knee slide under them, guns blazing, as they close. (If they get stuck, assume that only about half the door's total weight crushes the victim.)

The stats for high security doors came from one of those vaguely spooky corporate security websites who mostly sell to customers whose work emails end with ".gov" or ".mil." Just the thing for a supervillain's lair or MIB HQ! Feel free to boost DR as needed by adding extra layers of armor.

Part 11: Infrastructure - Low Tech Cemetery Items

More Ancient to 17th century graveyard stuff than you can shake a blessed crucifix at. How can you have a Horror or Monster Hunters campaign without it?

Note that sarcophagus and vault lid weights are listed separately, for all your tomb-robbing or vampire-staking needs.

A coffin is more or less hexagonal shaped, a casket is more or less rectangular. Vaults are free-standing stone structures designed to hold multiple burials.

It's easy to DIY fancy walk-in vaults using DF stats: assume 3-6" stone walls and an Average or better Grate or Iron Door.

Use the weights of 2 quart to 1 gallon Earthenware or Metal containers from Low Tech for cremation urns. Assume that the ashes of a typical human weigh about 5 lb.

Part 12: Infrastructure - High Tech Cemetery Items

In the late 19th century, the Victorians got really paranoid about grave robbers and really squirrelly about graveyard architecture. They went from the time honored practice of "tip 'em in, cover 'em up" to fancy metal (sometimes booby-trapped) coffins, elaborate grave markers, and overbuilt concrete grave liners with heavy lids to keep grave robbers from getting in. They also invented a few gadgets designed to allow those who were accidentally buried alive to call for help.

Surprising no one, the funeral industry latched onto this trend with both hands. Now you can get pre-made cremation urn and coffin burial vaults made from plastic-lined concrete with double-reinforced stainless steel walls. Combine it with a Oversized Metal Casket and weld the lid shut to keep a vampire corralled for the next few centuries.

On the other end of the scale, budget-minded tree-huggers can go to eternity in biodegradable wax-lined cardboard coffins.

The more-or-less standardized white marble U.S. military issue tombstone dates to this era, but really caught on in the early 20th century when World War I and the demise of the last remaining U.S. Civil War vets amped up demand. The trend caught on and many other countries adopted standardized tombstones to honor their war dead. Color and shape varies, but stats are similar.

U.S. Veterans Administration regulations require 5 or 6 feet spacing between grave markers with 10 feet of space between rows. Historically, however, the gravediggers sometimes got a bit cramped for space and packed the dead in with just 3-5 feet between grave markers and 6-8 feet between rows. This means 1 or no hexes between gravestones and 2-3 hexes between rows.

A TL6 Oversized Metal Casket can double as a futuristic photon torpedo casing for the remains of really, permanently, not-coming-back-for-the-sequel, cinematic spacefarers. Aim it at a nearby sun and try not to miss.

Part 13 - Infrastructure - Electrical - Wood Utility Poles

An obsessive's collection of creosote-covered softwood wood poles. Boooring! But necessary to figure out damage from vehicle vs. utility pole collisions and cover DR for gunfights in urban areas.

At TL5, wood electrical poles can stand in for Telegraph poles. Boost weight, etc. by 25-50%, and double DR for hardwood poles.

Part 14: Infrastructure - Electrical

TL6+ electrical infrastructure of the sort that a character with Electrician skill can install, modify, or sabotage.

Pad-mounted transformers are anonymous-looking boxes mounted on 6+ inch concrete pads and fixed to the pad with 4+ 3/8" or 1/2" bolts. The actual transformers are mounted inside. They contain power distribution equipment inside secured electrical substations or, less commonly, along the path of buried electrical cables. In most urban areas, electrical mains are buried in utility tunnels or pipe by TL7. At TL6 most urban areas feature a maze of elevated telephone and electrical lines.

Transformers are filled with oil which acts as a heat sink. At TL6 and TL8, the oil is flammable. At TL7, the "oil" (actually, PCBs) was non-flammable but presented serious long-term health risks. Any damage which penetrates a transformer's DR might require repair to avoid long-term loss of oil and increased risk of overheating or fire.

U.S. residential and retail business wires carry 120 volts and 60 amp current. U.S. electrical wires and heavy-duty residential and retail business wires carry ~240 volts, 60 or 100 amps. Household lines in Europe and the rest of the world carry 220-240 volts and 50-60 amps.

Electrical main lines might carry up to 765k or more volts, these are subsequently evenly split into lines which carry progressively less current unless a "step-up" transformer is used to increase voltage. High-powered electrical lines are mounted high on Transmission Towers to avoid accidents and sabotage.

In an urban area, assume that sabotaging a ~240 volt utility wire or associated transformer will sabotage power for all buildings within a 1,000 x 2d yard radius. Increase this area proportionately for knocking out larger transformers, etc. Comprehensively destroying an electrical substation (multiple Pad-Mounted Transformers and Small Transmission Towers protected by a minimum of a 6-foot high Chainlink Fence) might knock out power to significant portions of a major city. The resulting stress on the larger electrical grid might cause regional power outages. (Roll vs. Engineer (Electrical) to know what to destroy, when, and where, to create a signficant outage.)

Ultra-high or very high voltage wires, like those strung between Transmission Towers, are uninsulated, but don't damage living creatures as long as they touch just one wire and aren't grounded against an object with lower electric potential. People who are grounded or touching 2+ wires at once suffer Lethal Electrical Damage. The GM might require periodic DX rolls (or DX-based Electrician) skill rolls to avoid accidental contact.

Of course!

Some .pdf catalogs and websites make it really easy to cut and paste raw data into a spreadsheet. At that point it takes 5 minutes to generate an entire page of spreadsheet data.

Since I'm not limited by page count, I see no reason not to list any reasonable variations in dimensions or materials to give players a range of options. It also allows fellow obsessives to, say, turn an area from map or Google Street View into a GURPS combat map.

Part 15: Infrastructure - Folding Gates & Wooden Grates

This section supplements the stats from DF & Action.

Wooden grates can stand in for heavily framed windows. Heavy hardwood grates are used as ventilated hatch covers on ships from TL4 to TL6.

The stats for Light or Medium Grates from DF or action can substitute for metal window frames. Use Light or Very Light stats for leaded-glass windows, Light or Medium for frames made from harder metals.

Folding or "Scissors" gates appear to be an 18th century invention, first used in churches, but really took off in the 19th century when iron and steel became cheap. Simpler precursors were used as yurt frames, perhaps from late antiquity. Metal folding gates are used to protect doors and shop fronts. Wooden folding gates are decorative or are used to contain pets or small children.

Statistics for TL1-7 items are notional, feel free to adjust by +/-30%. Stats for TL8 objects are lifted from online catalogs and should be accurate to about +/-10%.

Part 16: Infrastructure - Elevator Doors & Control Panels

How many action movies and TV have heroes prying open or shooting through elevator doors or sabotaging the car control panel?

For GMs willing to add a 3D element to their game, elevators are a great complication for chase scenes and shootouts.

Heavy doors are highly ornamented and/or made from thicker metal.
Medium doors are typical commercial or residential building doors.
Light doors are cheap quality or for private residences.

Assume that the electrical door operating machinery is about 5-20% of total door weight. It is mounted inside the walls on one or both sides of the elevator door. Use Electrician or Mechanic skill to access or sabotage it.

Use Forced Entry or raw ST to pry open closed elevator doors.

At TL7, elevators incorporate safety features which prevent the doors from closing if they sense a solid object between them. Any force of ST 2+ will trigger the pressure sensors. Early TL6 elevator doors might close on unsuspecting victims with 10-50 lbs. of force (~ST 8-15). It takes 2-3 seconds for a TL6-7 elevator door to fully open or close, 3 seconds for a TL8 elevator door.

Control panels can be pried open using Forced Entry skill or more carefully disassembled using Electrician or Mechanic skill. Secure car operating panels (COPs) require Lockpicking or Electronics Repair (Security) rolls to open. Once inside, sabotage is easy, roll at +4 to skill. Reprogramming a TL8+ panel might require an Electronics Repair or even Computer Programming skill roll.

Most commercial and freight elevators are key-controlled to allow firefighters and building staff to control elevator movement. These are readily available from elevator supply businesses, but Lockpicking skill might substitute. Key control can prevent an elevator from moving or accessing particular floors.

Prior to the 1920s, all elevators were manually controlled, making elevator operator a modestly paid but viable profession.

The same stats and rules for COPs apply to floor indicator lights, arrival bells, and call buttons.

Early 20th century elevators featured automatically folding gate doors instead of, or in addition to, solid doors. They could sometimes damage fingers as they closed. Although eliminated from commercial elevators by the 1930s, they remained in use in cargo elevators for much of the 20th century and are occasionally found in private residential elevators to this day.

Part 17: Infrastructure - Elevator Cages and Dumbwaiters

Quaint artifacts from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Dumbwaiters are hydraulic or mechanically powered mini-elevators used to transfer goods or prepared food from one building floor to another. They were popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries but fell out of fashion after WW2. Modern dumbwaiters are occasionally found in hospitals, however.

Hand-powered dumbwaiters are actually a TL2 invention and can use TL6 stats as long as they have someone operating the pulley mechanism. In theory, they can support people but only the suicidal make a habit of riding them regularly.

They are usually accessed by lifting a hatch mounted on the dumbwaiter car itself. They might also have manually-controlled exterior doors which can be locked for extra security. Assume that doors have the same DR as the dumbwaiter itself, but just 10% of its weight.

The dumbwaiter shaft is about 20% larger than the "footprint" of the dumbwaiter itself. This might allow an intruder to send the dumbwaiter to a higher floor and then climb up the shaft by bracing himself against the walls.

Cage-type elevators save weight by making the elevator car from metal mesh or bars. Fancy residential elevators might be extremely ornate. In addition to terrifying riders who are afraid of heights they present numerous safety hazards. People can lose fingers if they stick them through the cage bars and objects dropped from inside the cage can injure or kill those below. Typical distance between bars is 1-3 inches.

High-tech elevators are surprisingly hard to sabotage in a way that makes them drop to the bottom of the shaft. It requires both severing the elevator cables (treat as 3/4" to 1.5" wire rope) and the fall-arresting systems.

Alternately, an accident can be arranged by making the overhead pulley machinery (assume 50-150% of elevator car weight) come loose. This option has the added benefit that the elevator power plant will crash down on top of the elevator once it lands.

Either type of sabotage requires a Mechanic skill roll as well as the ability to cut cables or steel mounting beams.

Merely sabotaging the cables makes the car fall until it self-arrests. This can be a 1-3 yard drop, however, which inflicts normal falling damage on the occupants. Badly overloaded TL6 elevators might break through the self-arrest mechanisms. Roll vs. the elevator's HT at -1 per 20% overload.
