Don't they get the Combat Reflexes bonus on their dodge?

They should! I completely forgot to give Vets, Aces, and Top Aces that!

*hangs head in shame*

For extra confusion, you could just emulate the US system from WW II. E.g., "F4F" was the Wildcat carrier fighter, while "F4U" was the Corsair. Every manufacturer got their own series of numbers, so there was no problem with there being two completely different F4's. Nor did the 4's have to be approximately the same design year or level of tech -- just a sequence number dependent on prior contract awards for other types. That last letter is the manufacturer code (like the Russian designations), even though it really ought to be first to immediately disambiguate the meaning of the type code and number in that type.

The setting will have that extra touch of realism if the codes aren't actually orderly and sensible. The scheme was designed by committee, after all. Bonus points if the ship designs actually have designations from two (or more) different schemes depending on how old they are.

And don't forget to give a lot of things the same name, like the M1, M1, M1, M1, M1, M1, M1, M1, M1, M1, M1, and M1, corresponding to a howitzer cannon, a 37 mm anti-aircraft autocannon, a 76 mm main tank gun (but not for the M1 Abrams, that tank was made later), a rifle (the Garand), a carbine (of completely unrelated design to the M1 Garand), an SMG (the Thompson, unrelated to either of the others), a bayonet (designed for none of the above - it was made for the M1903 Springfield Rifle, and was originally designated the M1905 - although the M1 Garand was able to mount it), a mortar, a rocket launcher (the Bazooka), a "grenade" (more like a flask of alchemist's fire - a Molotov cocktail that was self-igniting when it broke), a chemical mine, and a flamethrower, respectively. All of which were in use by the US in WWII.

More seriously, while that would give a touch of realism (in a surreal kind of way), I think it's better to have a more unified and logical naming scheme just to help the players (and GM for that matter) keep things straight in their heads.

There was also an M1 tank (well, 'combat car', but it's a tank) in that iteration of designations, it just was completely obsolete (though possibly still used in combat by the Philippines armed forces) by the outbreak of war.
