Many GMs don't progress past that stage - which is okay. Which is what the post was about.

More or less, you need to get the feel, some GMs seem to think that you can do it with X points...when you can't. Pretzeling the system into a unrecognizable form so you can emulate a genre type you like with fewer points is madness (It ain't even Sparta). That's all I was trying to convey.

I admit, I in general am prone to just starting at 300 points and potentially tweaking up or down from there, as I have discovered that I really like the comfortable 'mid level' feel in games, and 300 points is what I've discovered seems to bring that feel best in GURPS (or around circle 5 in Earthdawn or level 10 in DnD 3.0 . . . its not really GURPS specific)

I admit, I disagree (since I'm a heretic) with the notion of 'start with Action/MH/DF and go from there', especially on DF, as practically every gamer under the sun and practically every game system under the sun is used with 'here be elves, dwarves and humans with swords and spells fighting DM/rulebook fiat statted monsters du jour for the shinies', so leads to a very significant problem of 'why do we need a new RPG for this? Cant we just play XYZ we already know and have books for?', same goes for Action especially also (humans with guns, computers and lockpicks in the modern era)

With introducing new players and DMs to GURPS, go wild, it may be terrifyingly horrific with 90% of game time spent trying to do rule look ups and figure out exactly how to stat the psychic blueberry muffin, but thats fine, it showcases the awesome flexibility of GURPS and helps show how it stands out from other systems (similarly, I would pile in as many manuevers and things as possible, I mean, every system allows you to make an attack. How many systems allow a Committed Counterattack Tip Slash to the Neck Arteries?). People already expect there to be a certain element of rules familiarization and learning involved in a new system anyway

I can't imagine John Carter clocking in at less than say 750 or so points and I'm only partway through the second book

A 150pt John Carter of Mars wouldn't get the job done

I dont think 150pts would get Woola done

Carpe Blogiem: How Did You Get your Start?

How did I get my start? Well, it's sort of a long story, here's the abbreviated version. This GURPS-day I take the crunch and fluff and put it to the side as I recount my beginning as a game designer in today's blog post. Warning, navel-gazing ahead.

Your Triple Threats are awesome. I'm robbing the ones that I think would make for great demons (or in the case of the exploding barnacle thing, great additions to a demonic dimension).

Thank you, they've become a regular feature and their will be a new influx of critters very soon thanks to the starting of a new urban fantasy/horror campaign. So keep your eyes peeled.

Well in all fairness you probably could do Batman like characters...if your source material was closer to the 1960s TV show and you were making the very ineffective villains ;)

Session Recap: The Awakening - Casting Lots - Part II - Game Session 6

Well that's that. The story arc is finished and my players have decided to switch to a new campaign, thus this is the last installment in for the Awakening campaign for some time. Things get off to a slow start and quickly snowball from there as both psychic and detective put two and two together and get four...
