In a lot of hunter gather societies the custom of gifting your neighbours is pretty common. The premise being that if you give away what you can spare in good times then your neighbours doing the same will assist you in lean times. Obviously there's much more to it than that in terms of achieving peace,showing off wealth and ensuring good relations for when you want to trade, but it's an important social custom none the less. Understanding the value of things and what you can and should give away is really useful to this kind of diplomacy, as would be building a dependency through your gifts.
