Hmm, you're probably right, 18 is too high. 15 seems perfectly reasonable, though, especially if he's been working in the field for a while. Doesn't change the point I was trying to make, anyway.

When I see "PhD" I tend to think "newly minted PhD who hasn't gotten onto the tenure track yet." Sure, the top end guys are mostly around 16.

I tend to think of them in terms of work roles. At some point it used to be if you had a Master's in chemistry you were the one who decided what reactions were being performed, and how, and the Bachelors did the grunt work. Now it's more like, the PhD makes decisions, the Masters do grunt work, and if all you have is a Bachelor's you're either staying in school or doing something only tangentially related to chemistry.
