For instanc, say I have two different characters both having good cinematic capability with ALL guns, but one specializing in pistols and the other in sniping. So both have Gun!-14. But then I want the gunslinging pistol character to have Guns (Pistol)-18 and the sniper to have Guns (Rifle)-18. I'd like each of these characters to be able to buy up their individual Gun skills from Gun! rather than having to buy them starting from scratch.

The baseline distinction between the characters is these two skills. There are other ways to distinguish them and they'd be used as well - Zen Marksmenship, Gunslinger, etc. However, I think that clarifying how to buy up a single skill from the baseline Wildcard! skill would be very useful.

NOTE: This has been discussed in a number of threads but I've never seen an official ruling. If it is dealt with in GURPS Action or GURPS Gun-Fu please let me know.

I sort of thought this was pretty official myself in this thread

You're welcome! ^__^

I've been using that for a while now and it works really well.

That makes much more sense to handle it that way.

It was certainly intended to be. In fact, I thought that one ended up in the UFAQ. If not, someone can certainly feel free to cast Summon Molokh and change that.

Sent a PM Molokh's way since it's not in the uFAQ.

I'm wondering more about broad versatility of wildcard skills, too. As it is, I generally give them a pretty good amount of leeway and use them almost exclusively as niche skills and as skills for Contacts (as I think someone suggested somewhere on here a long time ago).

Being able to buy certain skills up from default is certainly useful and something I've often considered, although never actually implemented (didn't know it was official until now, but glad it is). So is being able to buy a technique for a WC skill and boost all the skills therein accordingly.

OT: I would love a Power-Ups book on wildcard skills! They seem to offer so much potential, but are largely neglected in the current books available. I'm stoked that MH will give them some proper airtime.

Yes, at the beginning of Chapter 1: Monster Hunter Templates. I felt that it was important to establish a clear "feel" for this series, so vignettes are a key part of it.

Hope to see more of these before the release, which I wish were sooner.
Not sure how many vignettes to leak, since a few of them make more sense in context than they do on their own . . . but there'll definitely be more leaks as we wait.

Hope the artwork is really good.
I'll let you know what I think whenever I get to see the artwork myself. :)

I am hoping for some axes in the next tidbit. We were promised axes.

But wouldn't that be just a big list that looks like-

Skill!: Skill, Skill, Skill, Skill, Skill, Skill, Skill, Skill, Skill, Skill, Skill, Skill
Skill!: Skill, Skill, Skill, Skill, Skill, Skill, Skill, Skill, Skill, Skill

There's not been much flavour text or extra crunch associated with them that would make it worth putting in a book worth money.

On the other hand, Talents look kinda similar and dry, so there might be enough in a combined Talents/Wildcards book to make it worth printing.
