Meaning that Numan's new stuff isn't very good, but we're supposed to pretend to like it because it's on the right bandwagon? I liked "Cars" because I liked it, back in the day. (And typing this, I was about to also give him credit for "One Of Our Submarines"... but that was Thomas Dolby. Huh. Numan only ever did one thing I liked) Any time you have to wave the ideological banner first, it's a bad sign. We so often pick our flag first, and then we embrace it, making our own rationalizations.

I'm not sure I know what the above post means, but I love Gary Numan; it seemed like the article was tailored for me. I just found it strange that it was on a boardgame themed journal. Everyone in the masses knows him for Cars, but he had so much more awesome music that It's a shame he's just known for his one hit. This took me by surprise and I'll take a listen to it, maybe not today, as I'm going through a lot, but some new music from Gary Numan may help cheer me up.
By the way, New Order had a new album a decade ago and it's also highly recommended. Devo had a new one about a decade ago, and with the exception of "No Place Like Home" it was also a great album. They had a second album featuring outtakes which was also awesome. "Big Dog", "Think Fast", and "Throw Money at the Problem" were the highlights... YouTube has all three, and a music video from the album, "Monsterman". With the second synth player (brother of the bass player) now departed from this world, there'll be no new original Devo music.

Oh, I see what the original repsonder meant now. I was closing the tab and it was a concept album about "climate change." I also hate when entertainment gets preachy. =sigh=. Oh, well. There's always the stuff from the 1970s and 1980s, when music was so much better overall.
If all you know from Gary Numan is "Cars", here's some other stuff to listen to from his classic days: Down in the Park (This is a live version) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5C86Q9FukYE Are Friends Electric? (This was a moderate hit in the UK) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0WNbm1jz6A This entire album (post-"Cars") https://www.discogs.com/Gary-Numan-Dance/master/69457

If anything, Cars was not representative of Numan's output even at that time. Albums like Telekon and I, Assassin were more typical of his work.
Thanks for the head's up on Intruder -- listened through, and liked it immensely. |
