Part 18: Infrastructure - Freight Elevators

Freight elevators were standard in multi-story commercial & industrial buildings from the 1870s on. Any late 19th or early 20th century department store, factory, or warehouse will have at least one. More dramatically, they're also used to get large items of equipment into (or out of) underground bunkers. They're third step in getting into MIB HQ or Stargate 1 after security checks and getting through the blast doors.

As a general rule, TL8 freight elevators weigh 100% of their rated capacity; I've assumed that early models weigh more due to less efficient design & lower-quality materials.

Paradoxically, freight elevators are lighter than passenger elevators with the same load rating due to lack simpler interior design.

A freight elevator might have gates as well as doors even at TL7+. They might also have front & rear doors to better maneuver large loads.

Classification ratings appear to be a TL7 invention, but I've retained them for TL6 elevators. I have no idea if TL6 Class B or C elevators actually existed.

Part 19: Infrastructure - More Freight Elevators

TL7 & 8 elevators weigh less due to better design & materials. It's entirely reasonable to boost HP & DR.

Late 20th and early 21st century elevators are also much faster than older models.

Hydraulic elevators, used in low-rise buildings, rise or fall at a pokey 100 feet per minute (i.e., 1.6 feet per second, or about 10 seconds to move up or down 1 floor). Traction elevators typically move at 150-200 feet per minute, while really fast elevators for very tall buildings might accelerate to as much as 400 feet per minute. Assume that a TL7-8 elevator reaches maximum acceleration after about 50 feet of travel. Fast-moving elevators might accelerate or decelerate fast enough that riders must roll vs. DX to avoid being thrown off balance.

I meant was it a deliberate Red Dwarf reference :-D But that is a very clever method, and besides the things you mentioned, this thread might be very useful for superhero games - where you have PCs with super-strength, the risk of somebody trying to hit something with a telegraph pole is there :-D

I've seen the series but I missed the reference.

That's exactly why I'm posting these. They're useful not just as cover for gunfighters but also as improvised weapons for superheroes, psis, or urban mages. Since many powers and spells are limited by weight, it's a godsend to know approximately how much useful bits of "scenery" weigh before combat begins.

My only problem is that I haven't come up with satisfactory and reasonably simple rules for ripping things out of the ground, off of walls, etc. Obviously, you need to have sufficient ST to lift the object, but after that you have to win some sort of Quick Contest of ST vs. whatever objects are holding the item in place.

Alternately, it might just be treated as a form of Slam or Grappling damage, where you need to be able to inflict enough HP damage to overcome fastener HP + DR.

Forced Entry skill and Regular Contest rules apply if you're trying to pry something loose and can inflict damage over time.

Part 21: Infrastructure - Passenger Elevators

Elevators capacities are actually rated by weight, but commonly designated by passenger capacity, assuming that each passenger weighs ~250 lbs.

Due to safety features, like hand rails, & cosmetic treatments like interior paneling, passenger elevators are heavier than freight elevators.

Heavy elevators are overbuilt and filled with decorative elements.
Medium elevators are standard commercial & residential building elevators.
Light elevators are cheaper or very spartan models, often used in private residences.
Hospital elevators are longer than standard elevators, to easily accommodate mobile beds, & often have doors which open on both the front &/or back of the car.

TL 8 building elevators are standardized to allow easy use by the handicapped and to accommodate a wheeled EMS litter.

Part 22 - Infrastructure: More Damned Elevators

Elevator Shafts: Elevator shafts are about 50% wider and 25% deeper than the elevator car. They extend from the machine room above to the machinery pit at the base, which is ~1-2 yards lower than the lowest floor the elevator serves. The overhead above the highest floor the elevator serves is ~2-3 yards.

The shaft holds the cables, electrics, tracks, and counterweights which allow the car to operate. Counterweights weigh about 60% of the weight of the car & are roughly rectangular pieces of steel stacked within a steel frame. The counterweight frame is mounted on rails on one wall of the shaft. Additional rails hold the car steady as it moves. Electrical and support cables extend from the top of the car to the lifting machinery above, along with pulleys, wire take-ups, and similar support equipment.

At TL8, some elevators don't require a machine room and mount the main motor and pulleys on the top of the car.

Cinematic elevator shafts are at least 50% wider and deeper than the car and are dimly lit (Darkness Penalty -3), with no operating machinery near the car other than cables. Real elevator shafts are dark (Darkness Penalty -5 or greater) and cramped with little space between the car and the machinery on the walls. Surfaces might also be covered with grease, giving penalties to DX and DX-based skill rolls. Real-life elevator surfing is a very dangerous sport!

Part 23: Infrastructure - Enough Damned Elevators!

Elevator Surfing: Roll vs. Jumping skill to jump between cars. Assume they are mounted in parallel 1 or 2 yards apart. Apply range/speed penalties based on relative speed between the two elevators based on their rates of rise/descent. Penalties for Darkness & poof footing (greasy surfaces) might also apply.

Failure means the jumper lands badly. Roll vs. DX or Acrobatics, with the same penalties, to avoid falling. Failure by 4+ or CF means they miss the car. Realistically, that means a fall, but heroes can roll vs. DX to grab the car edge & roll vs. ST or Acrobatics to pull themselves up on their next turn.

Realistically, a CF can crush a jumper in the counterweight mechanism or between the car & the shaft walls. Treat this as a modified Trample & Slam attack by the elevator; +1 damage/die vs. smaller opponents. Each yard of Knockback does +1d damage. Treat damage as Large-Area Injury (p. B400), but only rigid DR protects.

Horrible Elevator Accidents
Normally, elevators only fail due to sabotage or multiple critical failures, making them one of the safest ways to travel. Of course, Action ignores those pesky statistics.

Going for the Long Drop: If elevator doors open when the car isn't on the same floor unwary people might step into space. Roll vs. Per or DX to catch yourself in time. No roll is possible if you're leaning against the doors when they open. Failure means a fall to the bottom of the shaft or the top of the car below. Treat the impact as a Collision if the car is rising when the victim hits it.

Stuck In the Doors: Early TL6 elevator doors could close on people & not let go. Typical targets are limbs & loose clothing. Roll vs. Dodge to not get caught. Roll vs. ST each turn, possibly at a penalty, to pull loose. Each attempt costs 1 FP. Others can make Forced Entry skill rolls to free the victim. They can also roll vs. (combined) ST to pull the victim loose, doing 1d-3 HP cr damage to the trapped part.

Split Personalities: People caught between the elevator door frame & the car when it suddenly shifts take suffer the effects of a realistic CF when Elevator Surfing, but damage just applies to trapped body parts. Roll for hit location if they aren't obvious. Roll vs. Dodge, possibly at a penalty, to get clear. Fatal damage smears the victim down the sides of the shaft or bisects their body. Crippling damage to limbs severs them.

These injuries occur when an elevator fails partway between floors, someone pries open the doors to escape, & the elevator drops or resumes operation while they are only partway out of the car.

Part 24: Infrastructure - HVAC

Where would modern adventurers be without ducts to crawl through & rooftop air conditioners to hide behind?

Stove Pipes are ubiquitous building fixtures at TL5-6. If sabotaged while in operation smoke or carbon monoxide can quickly fill the room. Exterior stove pipes might serve as handholds for climbers. Just be careful that they're not hot before you grab them! They can also double as HVAC ducts for TL6 central heating systems. Sometimes they're wrapped in asbestos fiber blankets for insulation.

Rectangular HVAC ducts are basic TL7+ building equipment. Some late TL6 buildings have them, too. Stats don't change between TL6-8, galvanized steel is timeless. Maximum supported weight doesn't include the duct's own weight & assumes securely-mounted single hangers. U.S. Code requires them to be placed every 5 feet.

Realistic ducts have sharp edges & pointy screw ends on the inside requiring DX rolls to avoid entangling gear or taking 1d-3 HP of pi- or cut damage. Cinematic ducts have smooth interiors.

Realistically, things moving inside ducts are noisy; roll vs. Hearing to detect, possibly at a bonus. Cinematic ducts allow nearly silent travel; roll vs. Hearing-2.

People squeezing through narrow ducts might need to make Escape rolls to avoid getting stuck. Assume that anything smaller than 1' x 2' is too small for an adult human to fit into.

HVAC units represent big pad- or roof-mounted units. They're the things that action heroes hide behind during rooftop action. They might be protected by chainlink fences or similar.

Vent covers are generic flat wall, ceiling, or floor vents. High quality, adjustable, or commercial grade covers will be 50-100% heavier with increased DR. Use stats for Grates from Action or DF for high-security vent covers.

Part 25: Infrastructure - Too Cruel for School

Artifacts from the 20th century, back when students had lockers rather than bulletproof backpacks and libraries were vast shelves of analog data in dust-catching format.

Mesh storage lockers are found in industrial & law enforcement settings and in gyms. Most will be secured by a Cheap-quality to Fine-Quality Padlock or Padlock Combination Lock.

Solid banks of lockers were common features in late 19th and 20th century schools, bus stations, airports, and train stations. Most of them were removed due to security concerns following 9-11 Attacks. They can still be found in gyms and employee changing rooms.

Assume that a typical coin-operated rental locker is protected by a Good-Quality Lock. Depending on the era, $0.01-$0.5 gives you access to ~0.25-0.5 cubic yards of storage space for as long as the authorities assume that the locker isn't abandoned. That might be days or years, depending on the situation.

A key to a coin-operated locker is a classic clue in police procedurals and spy thrillers. Area Knowledge (City) skill gives the finders a guess as to where coin-operated lockers might be found, while a critical success reveals the exact location.

TL7-8 library shelves are heavy steel cantilevered modular shelves, specifically designed to not tip over, even in an earthquake. Older libraries used wooden shelves similar to those found in home libraries.

Books, etc. are listed by weight and cover value when stacked or in piles. The latter data came from a recycling web site and might be useful if the action moves to a junkyard or recycling center, or a hoarder's lair.

Card catalogs are standard late TL5 to TL7 library equipment and count as Basic Equipment for Research skill. They are filled with alphabetized 3" x 5" index cards held in place within their drawers by a metal rod. Unscrewing a knob on the front of the cabinet releases the rod, allowing the cards to be removed. In melee, the rod might count as a Cheap-quality, Improvised, Short Staff.

Each card references one book in the library's collection, as well as its call number and possibly its location in the library. Stealing the index card for a particular book is a classic dirty trick to sabotage competing researchers without actually stealing or relocating the book itself.

Densely packed index cards might provide some extra cover DR vs. bullets.
