What is TFT Legacy Edition?
The Kickstarter says, "what TFT should have been when it was first published 40 years ago", and "The three roleplaying books (In The Labyrinth, Advanced Melee, and Advanced Wizard), combined and updated into a single volume of 160 pages, with the index that the original release lacked."
Does this mean In the Labyrinth will contain the original TFT rules with better typesetting, some clarifications, an index, etc. but not with new experience rules and other things that have been discussed on the forums? I have pledged for "I Want It All" and if Legacy Edition is the original rules, I do still Want It All! But I'd like to know what It All is... |

Re: What is TFT Legacy Edition?
someone else will answer, but since the pack will be ready next spring, I suppose the rules are currently under revision and refit, hence Steve's questions and requests for suggestions and opinions here.

Re: What is TFT Legacy Edition?
The Legacy Edition is _not_ a straight reprint of the original game. This is -- where necessary and relevant -- an update to the classic game rules.
We are not reproducing the original games as they first appeared.

Re: What is TFT Legacy Edition?
Speculation alert:
"Legacy Edition" to me screams that this is kind of testing the waters. If there is a lot of interest (and there seems to be), then there will be an updated version of TFT in the works in a year or two. Does anyone know if the Legacy Edition will be replaced with a more modern edition in the future? |

Since the game will be, once again, a living game, it's reasonable to expect there will be further versions in the future. That's what's happened with every other major RPG and TFT should be no different. However, the time between versions of such games is normally 5-10 years, so I don't think that's something we need to worry about now. |

Re: What is TFT Legacy Edition?
While I don't think it's been explicitly stated anywhere, the implication of several remarks Steve has made on this forum over the past six months leads me to believe that a TFT 2.0 could be down the road in a couple of years (maybe sooner, depending on how well this Kickstarter does). I think one reason it hasn't been explicitly stated is because Steve just wasn't sure about how well TFT would go over in 2018. The good news is that this particular Kickstarter is on track to be one of SJG's biggest, which indicates a LOT of interest in the subject...
Further, the implication has been that rather than just "tweaking" the existing product, it would be a bit more extensive of a re-write. I would fully support that, given Steve's track record for finely meshing the various subsystems in his games into an interlocking masterpiece of a game. (Note: the above is pretty much pure speculation on my part, fueled by my understanding of a couple of off-the-cuff remarks by Steve, and informed by my own wishful thinking -- take it, therefore, for what it's worth; and remember, I don't speak for Steve Jackson Games in any way, shape, or form!) |

Re: What is TFT Legacy Edition?
You may be right JLV, but I don't want to put people off by speculating that this KS is in some way an "experimental edition", which will be quickly superseded. The game is fundamentally sound and any changes don't need to be major ones. Future development can be via splat books and other means rather than a complete revision of core rules. Guy has already stated that and I trust him to stick to that vision.

Re: What is TFT Legacy Edition?
Which is a very good point. Is a future edition possible? Yes, but as Chris so sapiently points out, SJGs has plenty on it's plate with the Legacy Edition and a hopefully large number of exciting adventures, bestiaries and splat books rolling out in the future!
As far as I'm concerned, a 2.0 version can wait for a decade or so; and I should have made that clear above. Consider me suitably chastised! ;-) |
