Sadly, you rarely get to fight people shorter or taller than this in real life.

Re: Size modifier in melee?
I dont understand how absoulute SM makes sense for melee.
2 Ants get into a fight. They are at -10 or -11 to hit each other. So assuming they have atleast a 50/50 shot of landing a blow then they have a brawling skill of 20 or 21? To make a less outlandish example. What is the penalty for a SM+1 orc to hit a SM -1 Goblin? How about a SM+10 giant to hit a SM -1 goblin with his sword? (How do we account for the ridiculous thickness/width of a sword?) (Would we apply a ranged penalty since the giants sword has to travel 150 yards or so before it even gets close to the goblin?) If the Giant can attack that goblin every second with a sword doesnt that imply he is swinging his sword at 150/yards per second or about 300 mph? (900 mph if he rapid strikes.) Isn't he breaking the sound barrier now with his attacks? I just want to know how to truly use SM. The rules seem to imply absolute which gets silly at extremes. Two giants with 15 skill... I want to hit that giant in the eye.... Ok so thats only a +1 to hit the eye... |

Re: Size modifier in melee?
This is a 3 year old thread. Relative SM in melee is official and in the FAQ: http://www.sjgames.com/gurps/faq/FAQ4-3.html#SS3.4.2.23

When SM are different (SMa > SMb) apply a modifier equal to the difference of SM-1 as a bonus to the smaller character, and a penalty to the bigger one. Hence you avoid big SM0 guys of 2,06 meters getting a bonus to hit small SM1 guys of 2,11 meters and inversely.

In Gurps Basic Set Campaigns say about the sizer modifier ONLY in Ranged Combat, and ONLY Ranger Combat table in the end of book. It's simple! Last edited by jamesfoxbr; 05-28-2008 at 04:09 PM. |
