Default Will people pay to watch you play GURPS?

I saw in the news that a sports player has accepted a 120 million dollar contract for six years. That's $20 million dollars a year to let people watch them play a game.

Sounds like a way to make money.

So how much money would you accept to let people watch you play GURPS?

Any sum. Then again I only play by post so it'd probably be like:

Streaming games is the hip thing all Those Kids Today (tm) are doing, and good luck to them with it. It is absolutely not for me. I've done my time dabbling in theater, and I wouldn't want to perform under those circumstances (I mean, I'd be hard pressed to perform under any circumstances, but certainly not those). Just not my idea of a good time, and I don't need any kind of money I'd plausibly get out of it. But I'd be delighted if somebody else were to put together the GURPS answer to Critical Role.

Well ... back in college days, a couple of my players proposed passing the hat for me during my sessions, and the two groups were largely in favor. That money would've been damn handy, and it wasn't as if I wasn't working hard and long enough to justify it.

I turned them down flat. And my reasoning then was pretty much what it would be now. Selling things to gaming companies, sure, that's how product gets out there for people to buy, and THAT money came in damn handy. But the moment I started taking pay for GMing, it wouldn't be a labor of love any more. I'd be a professional. The players would be my employers. I wouldn't get to have a bad day; I'd need to be on point and perfect, every time. I'd be constrained from making unpopular rulings. I'd be under pressure to make changes that they required. No thankew.

And while I'd question the sanity of someone wanting to just sit and watch me GM (let alone PAY for it), the same paradigm applies. My goal is to entertain my players. I've no desire to do what it takes to entertain an audience.

I can't imagine anyone wanting to pay to watch me play GURPS, but if they did, the cost would be based on 3 things:

1. What is my privacy worth? Seeing me interact with friends in my own home is giving the public an awful lot of information I wouldn't want online. It would have to be enough to consider self-censoring personal details when interacting with people. I could use more money but I'm not hurting so ballpark $500 for a 6 hour session.

2. What deal do the other players/GMs accept? I can't simply have a 3rd party recording without their consent, so they have to agree as well.

3. What the extent of the exposure and feedback to me and the wider public? If it's some national syndicate TV deal or podcast to millions, the price goes up a lot because I want my cut of the sweet sweet ad revenue. If it's just a webcam to some dude sitting quietly in Bumtown Idaho, well no extra charge over items 1 and 2 above.

Live-play podcasts and streams are surprisingly popular, one of them earns on the order of three times more money from one source than SJG earns from selling RPGs. Of course, that is the high end of a 'hockey stick' of incomes ...

Twenty million a year? That would certainly convince me to be sociable enough to play GURPS before an audience... and maybe follow the rules a little more closely.

Mind Blown! There's an GURPS actual play podcast replaying movies? Now if I only could stand listening to podcasts...
