As a reality check, HMS Warrior's actual crew complement included 66 "stokers and trimmers" (along with 2 Chief Engineers and 10 engineers). The "trimmers" had the job of moving coal around between bunkers to maintain the ship's trim. So, 20-30 per shift is about right.

Thanks. Do you have an online source for that? I did a search and couldn't find a breakdown of Warrior's crew by role.

Portsmouth's tourist page on the Warrior, with that number confirmed and more details on the entire crew complement listed by one Ship Spotter Steve.
