This is great! Can definitely use it for the new campaign ai'm working on. Currently about to begin a Gothic horror steam punk campaign with a twist-- Alchemy. The world, along with its steam and clockwork in Victorian London, also has alternate reality scientific principles, namely it's based on Aristotle's theory of Classic Elements-- that everything in the universe is made up of earth, fire, wind, water and aether. Alchemists are rare and limited to one specific element or area of study (forbidden alchemy like Necromancy and Demonology) due to difficulty of study and they are both respected for advancements they make and feared for unintended side effects (and the fact that many supernatural phenomena are attached to it- like vampires and werewolves). There is limited "magic", but it's been accepted as a normal science-- based on mathematical formulae and combinations of different elements..

Looking forward to reading through all of this for more ideas!

LOL. This made my day! I would be one of the first in line to pick that up.

My guess for the unexpected direction would be DF. I'm running a campaign now where one of the characters is an Artificer/Musketeer and tries to build all sorts of steampunkish devices.

In retrospect, the Barbarella movie had a touch of proto-steampunk in the production design. Running a Steampunk Barbarella campaign... might require a little more reference to Victorusn porn than would be good for the soul, I fear. But letting a naive ingenue loose in a twisted version of the China Seas, throwing in a touch of Sinbad, a bit of Flashman, and a twist of Roger Moore-era Bond, but with dirigibles and etheric shock weapons, suddenly feels dangerously tempting.

This comes dangerously close to the working description I have in mind of the Pearl Bright Ocean, in my Facets campaign.

Especially the Victorian porn part. Corsets and cutlasses, flowery bonnets and muskets and high leather boots, yarr! :)

My Pearl Bright Ocean campaign didn't have much Victorian about it. The most powerful navy belonged to Atlantis, which I based more on Greek legend than on Victorian pseudoscience. The PCs were an Atlantean privateer, a Canadian mystic, a rakshasa, a Greek god, an Irish god, and Errol Flynn. But then, the Pearl Bright Ocean is a natural attractor for all sorts of archetypes, so it could just as well be Victorian.

Nice!
The original GURPS Steampunk is what introduced me to GURPS and it'll be nice to get updated material on the genre. I'll be picking this up. Thanks for making this!

My primary inspiration is James Hook (Capt'n), only with fashion rather more updated, and with retarded firearms technology because natural laws in the Pearl Bright Ocean are a lot less sophisticated, and far more malleable.

(I.E., magic works well, but electricity and chemical energy more powerful than coal-gas and black powder do not.)

Basically, I want aerial Atlantean clippers built on magic carpet paradigms trading broadsides with dirigible air pirates, while wyverns and gulls swoop around and sea monsters wait to gobble up the bodies of those who fall to their deaths.

My notion of an Atlantean air-clipper would look something like this:

Or this:

Or this:

While air pirates might be a bit more traditional:

http://mrainbowwj.deviantart.com/art/Airships-399187122

Of course, there would be plenty of surface shipping, as well, because airships are expensive.
