Doubling up talents
Taking the Alertness talent twice for Alertness II gives no additional bonus to spot things, but the figure gains an enhanced version of the Eyes Behind effect (as per the spell) that ensures that even when they're prone (or in HTH), all attacks against them only get the +2 side bonus rather than the +4 rear bonus. The third level at Alertness III counts all facings as front hexes. They are able to apply ready shields or defend from any direction and even in HTH there is no facing bonus to hit them.

Re: Doubling up talents
There is a thing to consider, I suppose, from a design perspective. There could be only one talent or spell of any one kind/category and it can be improved by spending xp on adding tiers to it.

Here's some other talents I make multi-leveled:

Re: Doubling up talents
I'm doing something similar, but less GURPS-like. Many talents have multiple 'tiers', but rather that simply adding bonuses they build on one another by opening up new areas of knowledge or abilities.
For example (still in development)... Novice Tier ALERTNESS (A) Pretty much as written in ITL. Veteran Tier COMBAT AWARENESS (B) The warrior has honed his fighting skills to improve his peripheral vision and coordination in combat situations. As a result, side hexes will count as front hexes, and their rear hex counts as a side hex (similar to the EYES-BEHIND spell). Prerequisites: ALERTNESS BLIND-FIGHTING (A) Thru intensive training and mental focus, the character has achieved an enhanced level of perception and spacial awareness if they are deprived of sight or visual cues due to physical blindness, total darkness, invisible foes or otherwise. The result is that they suffer no combat disadvantage or movement penalty in such scenarios and will effectively function as if no sight-based hinderance exists within the figure's 'mega-megahex'. This ability applies equally to melee as well as ranged combat within that area. Prerequisites: COMBAT AWARENESS *Note: BLIND-FIGHTING is heavily dependent on sound and hearing so any effect (mundane or magical) that suppresses either will effectively counter this ability. Replaces ACUTE HEARING Legendary Tier SIXTH SENSE (A) Still working out the details for this talent, but features will likely include improved Dodge ability, an immunity to surprise attacks and maybe ghost detection. Prerequisites: BLIND-FIGHTING

Re: Doubling up talents
My advice: If the talent does exactly the same thing as Eyes Behind, call it "Eyes Behind". Anything else will just be confusing.
