Is Magical Mess the same as the base game? How do I add expansions to it?

So I am fairly new to this game, only ever played if a friend had the game. Recently I bought Magical Mess and we had so much fun playing that we wanted to add expansions. What I'm confused about is how would adding expansions work to Magical Mess? Is that possible? Do I need to but the base Munchkin or can I add expansions to Magical Mess?

From what I understand, from looking at its rules, Magical Mess has the same Classes and Races as the Munchkin base game. I would think you should be able to add expansions to it as if it were the base Munchkin game.
