Monstrous Regiment had a lot of moments where you could tell Pterry was throwing up his hands and shouting "But it's [CURRENT YEAR] why aren't we past this yet?!?!?!"

Well, I'm not sure that Raising Steam is entirely serene... and Monstrous Regiment is a war story; one rather expects those to feature a little horror at human failings.

I agree about Last Hero. Not necessarily about Rincewind (yes he's more developed, but I'd still rather read a Diskworld book without him than with him. Luckily most of his later stories also feature Cohen, so that sort of mitigates things. Sort of).

Funny all these endorsements for Small Gods, which is tied with Pyramids for my least-favorite. Shows some varied tastes around these forums, that's for sure.


I will however second the endorsement of Mort as a great place to start the books about Death.

Oh, definitely. Mort and Guards! Guards! are both excellent starting points, IMHO - Mort for what passes as classic fantasy and Guards! Guards! for deconstructing Fritz Leiber - style urban fantasy.

I recently re-read most of the canon starting at the beginning and yeah, the first two books share a setting but not much else with the later works. They're more Hitchikers Guide to The Galaxy in fantasyland, then Pratchett gradually settles down to relentlessly skewering modern humanity.

For those who are interested, here's the story on The Register.

This means that his unfinished works won't be finished by anyone else... which might be for the best, considering how few writers have the command of language that Pterry did.

It also means we won't see any new "authentic" plotbunnies to turn into Discworld Roleplaying Game adventures, which is slightly sad.

That's GURPS Discworld, not the Discworld RPG. 240 pages, ISBN 1-55634-261-6, copyright 1998.
