Default Discards from Curses

Q. Okay, I gotcha. But what if I have to discard a card, do I discard from my hand? Or in play?
A. If you have to discard and it doesn't specify from where (e.g., the Wizard's charm spell) then you can choose from any of the cards you possess

That's from the FAQ.

If I have no items in play and I get cursed to lose 1 small item, do I have to discard one from my hand, or is the curse ignored since I have no small items in play?

An Item is always an Item card in play. Anything in your hand is only a card in that respect. That curse would have no effect on you if you have no Items in play but have an Item card in your hand.

The Tongue Demon states: Discard one Item before combat. It does not state from where...do I have to lose one from in play, or can I discard one from my hand?

You have no Items in your hand. You may have cards which will become Items when played in your hand...

In other words, no, you cannot lose something from your hand to the Tongue Demon.

What I said doesn't change: An Item is an Item card in play. You might have Item cards in your hand, but they're still just cards at that point. When you put one into play, then it's an Item, not before.

Or for a shorter and FAR more comprehensible answer:

Curses, Traps, and Bad Stuff never target cards in your hand unless they say so.
