Default Number of parries with Martial Arts

If a PC has Karate (2 parries) and Wrestling (one parry), does he get THREE parries per turn if he's bare-handed?

Likewise, if a PC has Katate (2 parries) and Judo (2 parries), does he get FOUR parries per turn if he's bare-handed?

No.

Reality-check ensues. You only get to use one skill per second.

It is only one parry per weapon under normal circumstances (Sumo Wrestling and Wrestling are assumed to be 'two-handed' weapons). A character with eight arms could parry eight times with Karate though.

You know, of course, that there's not really a limit on number of parries per turn? It's just that after the first for a particular source they are made at a penalty.

There is no such rule. And there shouldn't be. It would mess up dual wielding something awful.

This, on the other hand, is right - parry sequences are per weapon. (I'm not sure the source for wrestling parries being considered two-handed but it's plausible.)

B376's Number of Parries seems like it might potentially allow unlimited parries but eventually they'll only succeed on a 3 due to accruing penalties.

Fair enough. I withdraw my objection.

Everybody gets one parry "per weapon" at no penalty for multiple parries. Usually, that's equivalent to "per hand," but parries with two-handed weapons – or with the Sumo Wrestling or Wrestling skill – count against both hands. Then there's -4 per parry after the first with a given weapon/hand.

So Joe Blow with no special skills can parry unarmed with either hand at no penalty (aside from the -3 for parrying a weapon unarmed, if doing so), then with either hand at -4, then with either hand at -8, and so on. His parries all start at 3 + DX/2.

If Joe knows Karate, the only things that change are that his parries all start at 3 + Karate/2 and he can parry weapons at no penalty (a little cinematic, but that's the rule). Karate doesn't magically add more unpenalized parries; it just makes parries better.

If Joe also knows Judo . . . he can decide that some of those parries use the Judo skill, and start at 3 + Judo/2. This is beneficial if he plans to set up certain Judo moves. But having another skill doesn't add more unpenalized parries; it just gives more options. Joe could parry once with either hand at no penalty, then once with either hand at -4, and so on; any of these parries could use Judo or Karate, mixed and matched as Joe likes.

If Joe has Sumo Wrestling or Wrestling, it's basically the same story except that since those parries count as two-handed, each counts as a parry with both hands and suffers the current penalty for the highest number of parries with either hand. So if Joe parried once with Karate using his right hand, then tried a Wrestling parry, it would be at -4 for having already used one of his hands . . . and future parries would be at -8 for his right hand (used once already for a Karate parry and a Wrestling parry), -4 for his left (used once already for a Wrestling parry).

Weapons mostly add the complication of handedness, which is ignored for unarmed combat: Parries with weapons in the "off" hand are at -2 because the skill is at -4 in that hand (Main-Gauche avoids this). There's also the fact that the -4 per parry after the first with a given weapon/hand may be halved for using a fencing weapon and/or having Weapon Master with the weapon. And of course you can't hurt your hands if you parry using weapons. Otherwise, weapon parries work as above.

Hypothetical character with DX 10 and 1 point in Karate for 8 skill. Do you use Parry 8 (3+DX/2) or Parry 7 (3+Karate/2)?

Either really. Using the Karate Parry allows you to parry weapons more effectively and has a few other advantages.

Right. If parrying some schlub punching you with a fist, you use DX/2. If someone is trying to cut you with a shortsword, then using Karate avoids the -3, which changes you from DX Parry-5 vs weapons to Karate Parry-7 vs weapons.
