Reach One and Close Combat
Hi Folks,
I have one simple question: Are you able to parry with a reach one weapon if you retreat from close combat? greetings ck.nienor |

Unless, of course, you are talking about the turn your enemy enters close combat. In that turn, you can parry with any weapon (or block) regardless of if you retreat. See FAQ 3.4.3.6. (That FAQ also seems to indicate that the answer for subsequent turns in close combat is "no" even if you retreat.) |

Re: Reach One and Close Combat
From the upcoming Martial Arts:
In short, close combat only limits an armed fighter if he starts out there and cannot leave. If someone closes the gap, he can tag them on the way in. If he's already in close, he can open up the gap and tag his foe. The moral of the story is "Corner the armed guy and go for the clinch, or you're toast.""You can parry a grab, grapple, slam (including a pounce or flying tackle), or unarmed Acrobatic or Flying Attack with a ready melee weapon as your attacker enters close combat."

Is that really intended or did you just neglect to cite the sentence allowing it? It wouldn't seem to make sense to me if you *can* parry unarmed attacks on the turn the attacker enters your hex or if you retreat. (Although I obviously cannot be sure how unarmed Acrobatic and Flying Attacks are defined, they sound like attack categories introduced in Martial Arts.) |

Re: Reach One and Close Combat
Actually, there's no binary can/can't in Martial Arts. There's simply a penalty for using a longish weapon to parry in close combat.
