Default Connections to 4E GURPS...

4E moved HP as a derived attribute from ST rather than HT. I can understand some of the reasoning for this decision but was aligning itself with TFT part of the decision making?

While TFT could be seen as a progenitor of GURPS, I doubt the former had any substantive influence on the specific refinements of GURPS 4e.

I thought they should have made HP = (HT + ST) / 2

As an old TFT fan, I remember looking askance at the GURPS 1e books in my FLGS and thinking "did they really have to add another stat? That kind of spoils the simplicity." :)

Similarly, I'm reluctant to adopt houserules to split ST and HP and fatigue/mana. It's nice giving wizards at least a little reason to buy something other than just max IQ.

I think a better idea is a talent that gives one or two fatigue each time you take it. 1 point for Wizard's.

If you're going to go down this route, I prefer the David Dunham approach from the Companion which splits all three Attributes, thus preserving the balance of the original game. I don't like the idea of splitting just one attribute or of some sort of derived score.

Not that anyone has said. It was a somewhat common house rule in 3rd edition and a lot of critters had HP rather close to their ST anyway, plus of course they moved fatigue away from ST in 4e.

There are various creatures and even humans where it makes sense that their muscle power, ability to absorb injury, and how healthy they are are independent things. It's pretty when they're all one or two numbers, but sometimes prettiness/simplicity means your game situation stops making as much sense.
