I think alignment is a way to force the newbie players to act in a certain way.

In the game, new players will still think "defeat the enemies" and "win"

Alignment forces odd choices. This is important for newbies.

Games, nowadays, like GURPS, have that covered with advantages/disadvantages/quirks. If it is on your sheet, you act it out that way.

So, for experienced players, alignment isn't nessasary. They get it.

Now, TFT on the other hand does not have alignment OR character traits...

I thank Steve and the gods that TFT doesn't have alignment!

You could add official traits, but I don't really want to. I guess it falls under "I'm an experienced roleplayer so I don't need them", but I like that ITL lists ideas for defining who a character is and what they're like in subjective descriptive terms that have pretty much zero game mechanics behind them.
