Depressing but plenty of gaming material in that. We know mostly how many died, but with a high margin of error. And if anyone just happened to take the opportunity to disappear afterward or explain someone's "removal" with paperwork putting them there at that time...who's to know?

On that I agree it is a great opportunity for such shenanigans, and would not be at all surprised if this didn't happen a bit. I was attempting to point out that that many people essentially poofing out of existence shouldn't really be that surprising, given the circumstances.

Per Varley's "Air Raid" and "Millennium" they are colonizing Alpha Centauri right now, in the future.

Millennium! That's the movie his post made me think of but not well enough to conjure its name. Wow, 1989.
Kidnapping people right before a disaster that would leave no trace or survivors/witnesses. Though it was a creepy moment when they avoided one infant as they were the one known survivor of the movie's initial plane crash.

I read that after The Longest Day about D-Day by Cornelius Ryan was published he was contacted by the wife of one of the people he had quotes from. Seems that her husband had been reported MIA at D-Day and she'd thought he was dead for the last decade.

Wasn't that the plot of a JAG episode?
IIRC, a rather shady businessman is among the missing uses it as a chance to make a new start and enlists under a false name in the military. A few years later, he accidentally becomes a war hero in front of a news camera. His former friends and his "widow" are less than happy.

I recall a report about a few people disappearing after some London metro train crash, seeing it as an opportune moment to escape debts and unwanted relationships.

About half a million tons per tower, actually. 200,000 tons of steel alone.
