For years I've been using plastic compartment boxes to store chits for wargames. This allows me to keep them sorted by faction or unit. Most versions are clear (enough) to allow you to find the right box without having to open them.

It's important to find boxes with dividers that reach all the way to the lid, however. Movers and others aren't good about respecting "This End Up" instructions.

Even cheaper but missing some of the advantages & disadvantages of individual cups are full cupcake tins themselves.

You can pick them up at the dollar (now $1.25) store.

I've forgone Plano-type boxes for ones with removable compartments.

Here's a link to a BGG entry I did on storing Car Wars 6e materials:

Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls have a similar plastic container that directly contains the icing.

Some game supply stores sell small zip lock bags for storing game items. Very popular for games like Star Fleet Battles with dozens of different types of small counters. I saw a few SFB players use Plano type containers but one OOOPs with the lid up and you now have hundreds of counters all over the floor. Drop the zip lock with Klingon shuttles and only the shuttles are escaping under the table.

I can see the cupcake tins being useful for keeping the small bits corralled during game play.

Costco in my area sells six-packs of tiramisu in individual servings cups that are essentially giant shot glasses. They can easily be repurposed for game and non-game use.

In the U.S., Country Time powdered lemonade mix in the 19 ounce plastic container has a scoop/lid that works great for holding bits and pieces. Roughly 3-3/4" in diameter and 1-3/4" deep.

There are products like applesauce and fruit cups that I take with my lunches. They come in plastic cups and these can be washed and used for this purpose. They work well for me. It takes time to accumulate a significant quantity of them unless you eat that kind of fruit quite often (I eat it a few times a week, generally), but they're reasonably durable.

A popular brand of laundry detergent comes in both bottles with handles and larger jugs with both a spout and a rubberized dispenser. If you have children then you do a lot of laundry and buy one of the larger jugs frequently because it's cheaper than the bottle by volume, and it comes with a convenient measuring cup snapped over the dispenser that you don't need because you already use fifty of them to sort fasteners, beads, the teeth you collect from fist fights, and also gaming parts.
