Demons vs Elder Things

I like both demons and Elder Things in Dungeon Fantasy. They are both similar monsters so I like to make them contrast each other. To me demons have a purpose or meaning to their madness and that is to inflict as much harm and destruction as possible to the Divines creation. To demons humans have a special purpose because they are creations of the Divine and by harming them they can damage the Divine creation. Humans have souls which was created by the Divine and those souls can be made to suffer or be tempted toward evil ultimately cause the damnation of human souls. Souls are spiritual and that transcends the material. Demons are spiritual beings and live in a spiritual realm called the Infernal which is separate from the material world. They can peer into the material world or they can sometimes be like ghosts haunting it. But most of the time when summoned they have a material form that is powered by the spiritual energy which is why they can be confined into a pentagram.

Elder Things in my world are the sad truth about reality, that we are nothing more that meals in a vast cosmic food chain. The Elder Things are part of the chaos that the material creation is composed of. The Elder Things often hide deep in the darkest part of space or they have been shunted into other dimensions by the Divine. Elder Things care nothing for purpose or meaning and actively destroy such things. They use psionics as their power source which is completely alien to the spiritual energies of mana, sanctity, faerie or morality. So basically demons are evil spirits while Elder Things are aliens.

As for the major cosmic battle, first there is the battle between good and evil to determine where the souls will end up, Heaven or Hell or other spirit world. The souls are placed in the prime material plane so that they can choose good or evil, Divine or Infernal. The problem is that the prime material plane also contains Elder Things that may possibly find an entrance in the spirit planes and destroy them. So the Divine wants to gather the souls of the material world as quickly as possible and then separate from the material plane. The Infernal also wants to defeat the Divine then gather the souls and then separate from the material world before the Elder Things can destroy the Infernal Realm. The Divine has tried to shunt Elder Things into other dimensions and remote places in space hoping to keep the Elder Things far enough away from Creation until the souls have been sorted out. But there are times when the stars are right when the power of the Divine to keep Elder Things imprisoned in other dimensions have been weakened and then Elder Things can escape and destroy all of creation and then enter into the spirit planes of Heaven, Hell, Arcadia and many others and destroy them too.
