There MIGHT be a monster that has that as part of the Bad Stuff, but it's a very, very rare effect and there might not, either. I don't have my database handy at home to check.

Curse! Bad Run o' Cards makes you show the one hand card you don't discard, that's all I can find in the database, at the moment. . .

You are level 1 and lose to a monster. Are you dead, lose all your stuff, etc or do you just shrug your shoulders, go 'eh' and discard the monster?
Our house rule is that when you are defeated by a monster you lose a card from your hand for every level you cannot 'pay'. So if someone at level 1 gets a monster that takes 3 levels, that player has to discard 3 cards (another player chooses randomly), in his hand or played (player chooses). If that player has no more cards in his hand or played cards then he loses his class or race card (or both). If there are no more cards played or in hand then the player dies. If they are defeated by a monster and does not die they do not get to draw a door card for that turn.
Good house rule?

Default New way to liven up the game...

A little thing our gaming group cooked up.
Munchkin Missions!
You earn a reward of an additional level and it counts as the winning 10th level if you can pull it off. Put each suggested mission on a card and mix them up and deal them out, one per player, face down so the player receiving it only knows what it is.

Suggested missions we came up with (as examples):
Play 3 curses (curses on oneself does not count) in a row.
Keep a helm, armor and weapon in play for 5 consecutive turns.
Keep your sex unchanged for 5 consecutive turns.
Defeat 3 monsters of level 5 or more in a row.
Avoid any curse for 5 consecutive turns.
Do not play any “go up a level” cards for 5 turns.
Become a half-breed with two races played and super munchkin with with two classes played for 5 turns in a row.
Of course, if other players are on to what card you have they will try to block you.

When you make your cards, make sure all players participating in this variant reads each card before the game begine that will be put into play. The mission card is not held in the hand, played as an item nor played as anything but a secret condition for earning an additional level. One per game per player.

Consider my following human combat rules, invented by me for Munchkin Booty:

Have at Thee [new phase, occurs before Kick Open the Door]:

(munchkin is the game term for human players)

A player may initiate munchkin vs. munchkin combat once during the new Have at Thee phase. Combat occurs here normally, except that there are no precise stipulated treasure rewards. If you prevail against a munchkin in combat, one does not receive a +1 level update for your character; instead you may inflict a penalty. Combat collaboration with other munchkin parties is forbidden during the Have at Thee phase; this combat is like a duel, occuring only between two munchkins at a time.

A player may, once per their turn, before Kick Open the Door, provoke another munchkin to combat by nominating the target munchkin. To prevent undue conspiracy against any one player in a 3 or more player game, it is the case that any munchkin which has been the target for combat may not be targeted thus again until the end of their next closest turn.

Either player may play one shot cards now as applicable, (except where those cards stipulate monsters).
The net combat total is now caculated.

-The provoker is the winning munchkin if the have the highest total.
-If the opponent munchkin had the lesser total, they are the vanquished munchkin. If either:
-both totals are equal, or
-If the provoker has the lesser total;
munchkin combat concludes here, has proceeded, with Have at Thee having been actioned.

The vanquished munchkin may now attempt to run away according to ordinary game rules, with relevant one shot items applicable. (If running away results in escape, munchkin combat ends, and still does count as having proceeded). If the escape attempt fails, the following combat results ensue:

-The vanquished munchkin incurs Bad Stuff, being their choice of -2 Levels, or any combination of these two Levels and 1000 Gold per level equivalent, not necessarily including any gold items cards in their hand**.

- The winner now rolls D6. The winning munchkin must sell applicable items totalling at least 400 + 100*D6 Gold, not necessarily including any gold items cards in their hand.**
This Gold amount represents attrition damage, and is not considered Bad Stuff. This dice roll may be targeted by applicable one shot items, of course from either player, before this Gold amount is satisfied.

-If munchkin combat did proceed (even if it was escaped, or did not result victorious for the instigator)
and the Have at Thee phase was actioned, it is now such that:
-Kick Open the Door is skipped entirely. [eg. 'Glass Bottom' cannot be applied at all during such a turn.]
-Looking for Trouble is skipped entirely.
-Loot the Room proceeds normally, from the Door Deck, whence a face down card is drawn.

-If munchkin combat was not actioned during Have at Thee, turn phases and Munchkin game play continue from the beginning of Kick Open the Door, now proceeding as normal.

Game Win Conditions notes:
Players may always choose to use the epic rules, or arbitrarily change the player win level value, say 10 to 20 for example [still with the rule that a player cannot "sell up" from the penultimate level and win, but must level +1 by killing one final monster], or even higher values. I proceed with the system that you always have an integer multiple of 10 total game levels.

**Bear in mind that the original Munchkin Booty rules concerning cards In Play and in Your Hand still hold.

While it seems interesting (although the not playing go up a level one seems rough) it just eems like to much effort for my group to keep track of.

Here's a copy of the (beta-version) house rules we're rolling with. We're currently playing Vanilla Munchkin 1-4, +Conan and M.E., but tuned the deck for more/better monster appearances. Some of these rules have been inspired by the work of others on this thread, and some are our own. Please give me some feedback!

Rad's (Beta) House Rules 1.6:

On Your Turn:
When you Kick In the Door and encounter a monster of your level or higher, you must fight it. If it’s a monster of a level lower than yours, or a Monster Enhancer, you must Double Down –see (2)– Otherwise, you must choose one of the following:
(1) Look for Trouble: Play (or add) a monster (or monsters) from your own hand to the table and fight.
(2) Double Down: Draw a second Door card, face-up, whose effects are combined with the first Door.
(3) Loot the Room: Draw a second Door card, face-down, and add it to your hand.

Pick on Someone Your Own Size
A Munchkin may only go up a level for killing a monster (or group of monsters) whose total level, including Monster Enhancers, is equal to or greater than his own.

The Undead Addendum
Munchkins may play any Undead monster from their hand into combat to help any other Undead, without using a Wandering Monster card.

Rite of the Ikran Makto
If a Steed or Hireling is drawn face-down, it may be equipped immediately. However, if drawn face-up, it must be fought as a monster: its combat strength is equal to twice the bonus at the top of its card. Additional monsters and Monster Enhancers may be played on it, and the Bad Stuff is Death. Defeat it, and you gain the Steed/Hireling (but no level).

On “Double-Dipping”
A Munchkin of (any race) may go up a maximum of ONE level from any given battle, regardless of how many monsters were involved (unless a card explicitly states otherwise).

Ambition Should Be Made of Sterner Stuff
(1) During the Charity phase, uncharitable Munchkins may simply discard their excess cards. However:
(2) The penalty for cheating is decided by the Munchkin in last place at the time of the offence. If the offender is in last place, she is at the mercy of her party.
(3) Rule-breaking Munchkins (if caught) must accept the consequences, no matter how cruel.

Too deep we delved there
Munchkins who reach Level 5 have ventured too deep to make it back to the shops. No selling loot for levels above 5; unless you are one of those shifty little Halflings, that is…

The Epic Boss Encounter
The only way to get to Level 10 is by combat, and at Level 9, all face-up monsters are Enhanced with an automatic +10 to Monster.

The ‘UNO’ Rule
When a Munchkin encounters a monster which, if defeated, might cause her to win the game, she must declare the battle “For the Win” (or something to that effect). Munchkins caught skipping this step before resolving combat must immediately go down 2 levels.

“Drunken Munchkin” Rules:

Drink, Curse, Hate
Whenever a Munchkin is successfully cursed by another Munchkin, the accursed must take a shot from the Munchkin™10th Anniversary Shot Glass.

Dead Man’s Draught
Ganked Munchkins must drink of the Munchkin™10th Anniversary Shot Glass before they may respawn.

Going Shot-for-Shot (Not Recommended)
Whenever a “One-Shot” Item is consumed, so too must its user consume a shot from the Munchkin™10th Anniversary Shot Glass.

The Guzzler's Grimoire
Whomsoever should acquire the Munchkinomicon shall immediately imbibe of the Munchkin™10th Anniversary Shot Glass forthwith!

EDIT: If anybody is wondering what Andrew's comment below is referring to, I had posted a link to the print-ready version of our house rules, which were very official-looking. That's fine for our private home use, but once something like that is posted online, it becomes an issue of distribution, trade-dress, branding, etc. So, basically, I took them down because they were too awesome-looking ;) The text here is unchanged from our private version, but presented without the SJG copyright art & formatting.
