The failure just wastes time and energy (you are using spells, right?), the critical failures waste not just the full energy costs, but you must roll on the critical spell table twice. Not great.

Ajardoor, this is how I imagine things at the moment; where are the insects?

And the monsters have used their fast flying to get into all your hexes, close combat. Close enough to grapple.

Bain is the fastest member in the party (5.5 basic speed), so I think he goes first.

Also, since Bain is under cover, camouflaged and stealthy, the creatures still need to beat Bain's rolls, factoring the penalty for cover (-2) their +2 from Infravision to vision rolls is neutralized.
