Default Can a thread appear in two forums at once?

We have a thread going in the In Nomine forum where we discuss creating a GURPS 4e conversion of the game. This thread would benefit from the rules knowledge possessed by the regulars in the GURPS forum. I don't want the thread to be moved - the focus of the thread is on In Nomine, so I think it should stay in the In Nomine forum.

Can the thread appear in two forums at once? (Usenet calls this functionality "crossposting".)

AFAIK, no, vBulletin doesn't support crossposting. One option (that involves a mod's help) is to make a second thread in the "secondary" forum that's just a pointer to the thread, then close it. That's the closest I've been able to come to crossposting.

No one's. We don't want someone cutting and pasting an entire thread's worth of discussion onto another thread -- that just bogs down searches and leads to confusion as the two threads eventually diverge.

How about moving a thread from one forum to another and leaving a permanent redirect. Again, it needs a mod's help, and I don't know that I'd do it just because someone asked unless it made the most sense for forum business. Even then, I'm not the person to best determine that, so I'd just ask up the hierarchy to see if it was acceptable.

That isn't really what we're looking for in this case - moving a thread indicates (or at least implies) that it didn't belong in the original forum. In this case the thread belongs in the original forum more than it belongs in the destination forum.

Regardless, it's the one option for crossposting. I'm not speaking about any particular thread.

The problem with "Move leaving Redirect" is that the Redirect never gets "updated", and thus it will fall off the first page fairly quickly as it's "most recent post" will become out of date.

I don't know if you can sticky a move-redirect, which would be the only alternative.

Otherwise, a manual "Come to this thread" thread, with an occasional "bump" would be the best bet.

PK already gave the answer: leave the thread where it is and post a pointer to it in the other forum.

We ask users not to "bump" threads. That annoys a lot of people and moves legitimate conversations off the main page. However, if there is a SPECIFIC question that the IN people would like to have GURPS fans take a look at as the discussion evolves, that would be a legitimate followup post to the pointer thread.

Just to amplify/support this point:

One thread that gets bumped every day or two wouldn't be a problem.

Fifty threads getting bumped WOULD.

And we'd definitely have fifty people, soon enough, who think that THEIR thread deserves to stay on the top page.
