The "holiday" was begun by John Baur and Mark Summers and popularized by humor columnist Dave Barry.

But "pirate speak" goes back to Disney. It was Robert Newton in RKO-Disney's Treasure Island (1950) that started the stereotype. In reality, that probably has little relationship to how real-life pirates spoke. Especially because they came from a wide variety of different places. Including the famous cross-dressing pirate Anne Bonny.

I bought one of the Sophie's Revenge ships during the KS. Still not assembled as I don't have a safe place to put it once it is out of the box. So far have resisted the urge to pickup some of the Glow in the Dark pieces for it.
