I have just the CRT printed out on photo paper at a larger size, and it is mounted in one of those 8 x 10 clear plastic picture standees. Makes for fast easy reference on any table.

Oooh, stealing that idea!

RE: CRT, have you seen the big, colorful odds rendition in Ogrezine? Martin Gallo made a nice rendition that removes any need to calculate the odds.

Shabbat OGRE thoughts:

This talk of minor bloc/powers Ogres got me thinking. Would Israel, Japan, China (others) do "regular armor" the same? Would they have special units that were optimized for their areas?

Areas with lots of coastlines or primarily island based would perhaps develop more amphibious armor. Given the historical example and the mention in GURPS Ogre, the Israelis have their own take on tanks. And so on.

Now as to the practicalities of that, I can see a counter sheet with some minor bloc/faction units being far more practical to produce as product than say a specialized set of minis.

Anyway, I want this.

Coincidentally, Martin is my usual opponent in our weekly games (except with Summer here, we've not been able to meet as often).

The odds rendition is beautifully done, & I will try it out at some point.

Currently, I use the Cheat Sheet PDF printed out on photo paper & in a heavyweight document protector. I have several copies printed out, so each player gets one. Bystanders too. It makes a nice, heavy document that looks & feels good.

This arrangement works great, but I'm thinking of something extra.

I enjoy rolling dice by hand in a tray. My current tray is a $2.50 closeout wooden box, stained, urethaned & lined with green adhesive felt left over from another project. Its an upgrade from the glass salad bowl. Its perfectly serviceable, but with the beautiful, coordinated style of the current Ogre materials & docs, I'd love to have a dice tray that uses current graphics & colors.

I've been kicking around the idea of a fancy CRT to go with the dice tray. Something more substantial than a paper document. Maybe 3D. or engraved. definitely colorful. This is still a rather murky idea at this point, but I'm thinking of something along the lines of a "casino" version of the CRT -big, bold, substantial, to sit next to the dice tray.

I usually print out a large size copy of the CRT and mount it on foam core, then set it on an easel near the game table. I pretty much have it memorized, but new players appreciate it.

I like your question.

As a counter to your question i'd ask how many main battle tank guns are there these days? If you're NATO leaning you're most likely armed with a 120mm smooth bore (SB) German derived gun, if you're leaning eastern block you're likely to have a 125mm SB Russian derived gun.

South Korea K2 = 120mm SB,
Japan Type 90 = 120mm SB
Britain Challenger II = 120mm Rifled (seems there's one in every crowd who does it just a little different)

China Type 99 = 125mm SB
India T-90S Bhishma = 125mm SB

But to your point, the attack strength (main gun) isn't everything as each of the above examples have different armor suites, electronics/targeting packages, transmission/engine variants etc.

The question comes down to are these "national/local choices" distinct enough to hack out distinctions in stats such as 'does a heavy tank from whereverstan get a 'D3' or 'D2' or does one rate an M2 while the others get an 'M3'. etc. etc.

Well IIRC some special counter sheets are more about the visuals and new unit types. Maybe the future Merkava might be something between a heavy and superheavy. Maybe the forces of the Federation of Hong Kong & Taiwan might have some type of GEV optimized for "light blue" ocean fighting?

Yes some would be different D or M but it would make sense because of where they fight.

I taught a non-gamer how to play Ogre last night, just because we needed something to do besides...you know, never mind the specifics. :D But she grasped the mechanics almost immediately and we knocked out two games in about two and a half hours.
