Last spring, while visiting my parents in Florida, my father went looking for a copy of Laurel & Hardy's Sons of the Desert. It got to be an obsession. (We actually found a video tape copy at a thrift store . . . it turned out to be a Betamax!)
While I was there my folks signed up at Blockbuster, figuring they'd rent a copy. I asked the clerk to do a search for the movie. "Laurel & Hardy?" he asked, "Who are they?" Oye Gevault. This is actually somewhat understandable. When I was a kid, pre-Cable, there were a less than a dozen TV channels. On Saturday and Sunday mornings the indie stations (channels 5, 9, and 11 in the NYC area) ran old comedy movies as an alternative to the cartoons on the network stations. A kid could get an education in old time comedy -- Laurel & Hardy, The Little Rascals, Abbot & Costello, and The Three Stooges -- when he got tired of H.R. Puffnstuff or endless reruns of Bugs Bunny. Today, it's harder to find that old time stuff, and when it does run it is on "old fogey" stations like TV Land. Kids grow up watching Nikelodeon and Cartoon Network.

She was only off by a year, if she thought 1939...still the 30s. It is good to see some things do not age but only get better. Speedy recovery to Loren. Wish that I could do more but the best therapy now is rest followed by rehabilitation (which hopefully Social Services can pick up the tab - or am I being too Canadian again). My mum did not have a bypass as 2/3 of heart died in the infarction and lived a full life for 13yrs more years and she was older than you. So hang in there. |

LKW Update:
Still tired as all getout . . . I have to force myself to get up and walk the 5 minutes to the grocery or the 120 yards to the mailbox. Sis left last Thursday, leaving me on my own for a while (until my nephew decides to drop by without my calling 911 : ) you may remember that he was one of the paramedics who responded to my initial call). I'll have to get to my doctor's office Tuesday (they're closed Monday for Labor Day) . . I have a scratchy throat that seems to be turning into congestion in my lungs, which is bad for patients with lungs that have ben irritated by surgery, so I want to get that checked out. Thankfully, I have enough extra cash to cover that due to your kind donations recently. Please continue to spread these reports as you see fit, and thank you one and all again.

I just wanted to post this info that Dom Mooney kindly put up on the TML
---------------- Power Projection Home > Want the PP:Escort ships? Fundraiser for Loren Friday 10 September 2010 Filed in: News You may not be aware, but Loren Wiseman – one of the founders of GDW and the man who was responsible for Traveller’s continued existence at Steve Jackson Games after Imperium Games imploded – has had a heart attack and is presently in hospital. As a freelancer, this has hit him hard financially in terms of medical fees and his ability to work. As a result, BITS would like to join in some of the efforts to raise funds for Loren and give something back in return... Send a donation via Paypal to Marc Miller at Farfuture@gmail.com, marking it ‘Loren Wiseman Fundraiser - Power Projection’, and then send a copy of the transaction confirmation to webmaster@bits.org.uk. If I receive confirmation of more than $100 in transactions, I will make the PDF of all the ships for Power Projection: Escort that were not included in Power Projection: Fleet available to download for free on 20th September 2010. These are: Imperial 200T SDB Broadsword Class Chrysanthemum Class Fer-de-Lance Class Kinunir Class Midu Agashaam Class Zhodani Chtierabl Class Tender Plokl Class Shivva Class Vlezhdatl Class Zhdoq Class Zhodatl Class These will be updated to match the Power Projection: Fleet SSDs and include Points and RCP values. I will post updates on progress via the @BITS_Traveller Twitter feed. Thanks, Dom |

LKW update: I am continuing to make some small progress towards re-building my stamina, but I have discovered that it takes stamina to do that, and I don't always feel up to it. My left leg is still the site of some discomfort where the donor viens were taken out, and both legs are still swollen. I'm getting into the swing of my diabetes regimen. Shoving a needle into myself three imes a day is not as much fun as it sounds (and it doesn't sound like much fun at all). I also get to stick myself with a teeny-weenie lancet to draw a drop of blood for my blood glucose level test several times a day. During my training at the hospital before I was released, I was told I must be very careful not to accidently prick myself with the syringe I just used to inject myself with, but I guess that's just teaching me good biohazard disposal technique. I can now raise my arms over my head for several seconds at a time without causing serious discomfort, but I still have trouble sleeping more than 4 hours at a stretch.

Loren, we've been over this.
The bed is for sleeping. The rack is for extracting overdue JTAS articles from authors. Don't confuse the two. If you're sleeping "at a stretch," some diagnostics may be called for. ;) |
