I think the "pre-boiling pot" tech level is TL0, and mid to early TL0 at that. Pottery becomes abundant in the neolithic, and once you have pottery, you usually start boiling things.

Re: cauldrons
You can boil things in a leather sack. It's a little complicated but you can do it.

Yes, and the player is proposing to acquire a very large leather sack, in case the character ever needs to reanimate a troll with cauldron magic. The smaller cauldrons are for cooking dinner . . .

Re: cauldrons
I think if anything TL can help determine the divide between the (relatively) lightweight traveling equipment and something that you'd see in a settlement or household.
Traveling is tough on gear, so pottery wouldn't last so early on I think the hide pots that are heated using stone boiling is what you've got. Bigger ceramic pots would stay at home where they can be properly handled so they don't break from use or accident. Or, as folks have pointed out, disposable ceramic/earthenware stuff can be supplied by the local potter. It'd be a TL3 time period probably before a proper little metal cookpot is something you'd find in the camp gear listing. |
