Thanks for understanding, Dorin Thorha and Rasimus. It's one of the hardest things I've ever done to say 'no' to someone who wants to join one of my games. [" 'T'ain't NATURAL, dagnabbit!"] I wish you very happy lurking, and we may be very glad to have a replacment player standing by one day not too awfully far off.

Captain of a small vessel has Merchant Rank 3. The other officers should be Merchant Rank 2. The doctor could be Merchant Rank 3 because of his specialization (most militarily organized organizations fast track people in hard-to-acquire specialties). All the Enlisted are Merchant Rank 1.

I'll rebuild my character with a few less disads (actually, that's good. I was grasping at straws with the last few there...)

Also, they've got a PbP forum where we'll eventually need/want to move these discussions to avoid cluttering this forum.

These Ranks will be Merchant Marine, yes. There are private merchants in operation also, but the Merchant Marine fleet has established maintainence facilities, fuel supplies, dining facilities and dormitories. They also provide you with the perishable supplies needed for your voyages like food and drink. These services are better on worlds with larger Starports, naturally, but even a world with a Class I Starport will provide you with spam/tunafish, TANG to drink, and a cot in their tent.

We got 6 PCs and three players so far - why donīt we assign 2 of these 6 to Dorin and Rasimus ? We donīt have to raise the number of PC slots this way.

I'm easy. Run with whatcha have. If the universe does have something up it's sleeve, I suspect stray bullets may whittle... hmm. That may be unhealthy to even suggest.
