Hello everyone!

Out of an immense interest in prior Racing and Car-Combat boardgames before now, I've recently chosen to order the first bundle for the Pocket Edition of Car Wars alongside its Compendium.

As someone very new to Car Wars, I wanted to come to the forums and ask for any tips or recommendations for a new player. Whether its little tricks to keep the game flowing and not get bogged down in rules discussions, or ways to teach the game to others - I'm very much open to all!

Thank you for your time.

Big one: The more stuff you can write down before the game, the less time you'll spend having to look s[tuff] up. If you look at some _ADQ_ scenarios, the vehicles will have TH numbers, damage, etc. written on the car sheet, so it's right there rather than having to silly-walk through the rulebook to find it.

as 43 said, keep it all handy...

simplify at the start, pick 2 simple cheap stock cars (same for everyone) in a simple box arena and work out questions

start designing low end cars and work up to complicated terrain with expensive unique vehicles

Start small.. killer carts or cycles, just to get a feel for movement and play.

The advice to have things written down is good; I myself instead just print out the pages in question from the Compendium 2.5 PDF.

The standard game is 1" = 15'; many people use 2"=15' or 3"=15'.

Use the turning key, it makes play much simpler. If using double or triple, scale it the same.

The heart of the game is vehicle design... and most of the standards have some well known weaknesses, but play a number of different sizes of cars/pickups/vans/cycles until you're comfortable. Don't immediately dive for the construction rules nor the other, odder, vehicle types. Once you realize a weakness, redo the design, then tweak it, play it, repeat.

Most of all... Welcome! Have fun.

Edit to add: Oh, and note that with the Compendium, there are just enough skills that are non combat to enable using it as an old school RPG... once comfortable with it, grab some of the old ADQs with GM'd adventures... and blend board and RPG modes like a real Old Schooler...

Once you get the tules down, you can start getting a campaign going and the old ADQ and region guides had all kinds of cool things you can do for mission and adventures for an RPG session also along with many that can be done solo.
