Or lead off with a more physical attack to try to force their opponent to cast a Blocking spell. Maybe these mages actually do some staff training so they can attack and defend against such attacks without magic.

This is a good point. If all magic works this way in the setting then it's a 0 point feature and if you don't want to be subject to it you need an Unusual Background (or perhaps Cosmic on your Magery).
