Evernote (and similar apps) is really good for this as most of us have our phone on us all the time. I even wrote a post about it on my blog some time ago.
One trick I learned was to leave a crayon in the shower, because I don't know about you but my brain fires up and spits out all sorts of ideas when I'm bathing. Can't bring the phone, but you can bring a crayon and then you can just wipe it away after you transfer it to better media (or just a take a picture and save in Evernote).

Evernote is looking a bit shaky these days - they've been shedding staff through this year. At the very least, I'd recommend having up-to-date local backups.

I've had no issues and I'm a power-user. . .

For a REALLY fun time, write that note into some part of an ongoing or future adventure. Margin message on a treasure map. Incoherent comment painted on a dungeon wall with goblin blood. If you don't want to tease the players, put it on the Gamemaster map margin, with fluorescent pink Magic Marker. Make it easy to find, especially for that evening research project when you're not actually playing but need to study the note for a different game. Make it easy to understand, too. Scribbling it in Olde Gaelic with Runic letters might not give the intended result.
Not that the potential for hilarious misunderstanding does not have its own appeal . . . Colin Keizer |
