I don't think this is a crazy idea at all. It's basically very similar to having all Melee skills default off one another, i.e. you pay one point (like a perk) to get the basic DX defaults that you'd have without spending any CP at all and then the ability to improve all defaults from there. You're just adding the Weapon Defaults as Techniques option. I think this is a very good solution (but I don't use GCS).
