There's a long tradition of these in RPGs.

Gary Gygax and some of his original group used them quite bit for names. (Tenser = Ernest, Drawmij = Jim Ward, etc.).

Look around, particularly in some of the older RPGs, you might be surprised at what you find.

I had a similar situation when I encountered Wernda's counterpart (in a chat room rather than a game). When I realized that the site owner, one Trebor, was Wizardry's Robert Woodhead it was an interesting day.
